L5P Power and Torque Released

Recommended Posts

Hmm. So according to Wikipedia:

The 2016 Cummins for the 2500/3500 Dodge 385 hp 900 lb·ft Torque

The 2016 Power Stroke for the F250/350: 440 HP 860 lb-ft Torque

And the D-Max now will be 445Hp with 910 lb-ft Torque. Whoopie Do. a whole whoppin 5HP more than Ford and 10 lb-ft Torque more than Dodge.

We're talking a real game changer here, folks. Yup, the Duramax sales are going to soar now! <sarcasm>

With all the power they make now, the OE's are really trying to satisfy those who modify, but in the OE's case, fully compliant with emissions. Amazing the power they can make with all the stuff tacked on to them. Honestly, one of the big three's newest would be way more than enough in stock form.

Some great numbers though for the L5P. Waiting for the real meat and potatoes on the engine still...

The power isn't surprising at all, these are all detuned diesel engines, they are just bumping the tune up from time to time to make the numbers better.

Dodge made that statement years ago about the Cummins being detuned (guys always commented how the same engine in a non-Dodge application made a lot more power). Before the aftermarket came into its stride, guys used standard (and unmodified) off-the-shelf Cummins parts to make more power (different fuel plates, different injectors, etc.), but all OE Cummins parts for other applications (RV, marine, agricultural, ect.).

It's not like a gas engine that your trying to wring every last bit of power out of to make impressive numbers. That's why a simple program on a gasser nets you 10hp and a simple (and very introductory) programmer on a diesel will easily net you a safe 100hp (thinking Madd's Smarty Jr on a 3rd gen Cummins).

Why are they detuned? To make the rest of the drivetrain live...the engine isn't the weak point.

OTOH, the only thing that wasn't changed when the LML was released was the bore/stroke/displacement. New block/crank/injectors/turbo/HPFP/ etc etc etc. Alison was updated as well to handle the LML.

Until the information is released we really have no idea what has been changed to keep it durable while producing 20% more torque than the LML.

I think the block is made of the same material as the Ford Power Stroke. Compacted Graphite Iron. GM has invested huge in the Moraine factory.

For Release: Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, 1:15 p.m. EST

DMAX Plant Investment to Create About 150 New Jobs

MORAINE, Ohio – DMAX, Ltd. will invest $82 million at the DMAX plant for future Duramax diesel engine-related productivity improvements, creating approximately 150 jobs over the next three years at the joint venture between General Motors and Isuzu, dependent on state and local incentive approvals.

Less than a year ago, a $60 million investment was made at the plant to make design changes enabling the engines to meet future emissions requirements”

----------------

This is why they can make an upgrade of 12 % in hp and 19 % in lb/ft. At last upgrade 2011 the upgrade was only 32 hp. Observers ment that the old greyiron block was at the "end of the road" and couldn´t stand more. This upgrade is 50 % bigger than the last one. And I think steel pistons will be in the mill.

Soon we will know
