Navigation headache.....

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow truckers....

I am a newbie here, so please forgive my ignorance. We just bought a 2016 Silverado 1500. I am sooooooo confused about what navigation options I have. I have a free ?-month OnStar subscription (came with the truck) and on my touch screen, I have a green OnStar Navigation button. Will my navigation go away when I let the OnStar subscription end, or will it default to the regular navigation program? I can use my smartphone and any map program I want, but it uses my mobile data. I am losing sleep over this...I am a technogeek....please don't judge me! Any help in this regard will be appreciated!! Thanks in advance....

Hi Debe, beautiful truck, check out your window sticker and look for the navigation option. I think it's around $500 extra. If it's not on there you will lose your navigation after the 6 month trial period is up.

Onstar nav isn't worth even being free. It's not real nav in my opinion. You have to call Onstar and give them an address or place and they have to look for it. The one time I decided to try just for kicks they couldn't even find the store I was going to and it wasn't a newly opened store either. Even if they find the place or address you're going to, it's the most basic nav it can be. There's no map or anything. If you don't have factory nav (not Onstar, actual nav) then you'll have to use your phone or get a stand along GPS. If you use GPS a lot or enough to be worth it, maybe try to get unlimited data for your plan. I've gone on many trips using my phone as the GPS. The Google Maps for Andriod is just as good as a Garmin and better than some lower level Garmins and it's free other than the date being used. If you miss a turn it also recalculates a new route as fast or faster than Garmins. I use Sprint and have Unlimited data and it's worth it.
