Chrome V Black

Recommended Posts

Many people want to change their chrome to black paint. I had a body color front on an Excursion and I chased chips and rust for 13 years, I wished for Chrome the whole time. Remember Gold packages, they date the heck out of a car now and look odd, the trend to black rims, black everything is fine but it will always move back to chrome. Would you black out a 63 Cadillac? A Road King Harley Davidson? A 57 Mercury? Nope. When I went shopping for a truck I wanted it dripping in chrome, I found my SLT gleaming it the sun just begging me to buy her. Now I clean off every bug that hits it and Polish it like it is jewelry, which it is. Don't get me wrong, black out can look great and I wouldn't take that away from anyone, it's a good look, I just love the look and durability of chrome.

I like the shiny chrome.

Personally I do not like painted front end, and then people always covering them in protective plastic. I would recommend trying plasti dip on the chrome parts before painting them. Once you paint them there is really no going back as you have to rough up the chrome for paint to stick. With dip you do not need to do this and it is cheap easy and non permanent. The upshot is dip is technically a protective coating so all you are doing really is protecting the chrome anyway and making it look black or a ton of other colors including some wild options.

I dipped my badges and some other trim pieces and it came out sharp and was cheap and easy to do.

At least with white you can paint it without worrying about faded color. I took the bumper of my X off and had it sprayed with line X, same as the bed liner. I think you can get that in white too. That lasted and never chipped.

When I was younger I guess you could say I was in my chrome phase where I wanted as much chrome as possible. By the time I got my '14 I was at the point where I do still like chrome, but I don't want everything chrome. I like the chrome grille shell with the black insert (Z71) on my '14. The grille, headlight trim and bumpers are probably the most chrome I want on this truck not counting emblems. I know I'm keeping the grille and headlight trim chrome. But, I do want to have my bumpers black chromed. So they will be color matched while being chrome instead of paint. So it will be more durable. I haven't even attempted to look into the cost, but so far that's what I want to do in the future. If not black chrome then my next option would be powdercoat.
