Max tow today

Recommended Posts

I took a 12'x6' electric over hydraulic dump trailer today (4000 pounds empty) and loaded it with 5 cubic yards of 1 to 2 inch washed river gravel. This gravel weighs 2700 pounds per cubic yard, and I may have been overserved (got more than I paid for) a little. So, let's say 13500 pounds minimum of gravel for a loaded trailer weight of 17,500 pounds. It was a fairly low profile trailer, so wind resistance was a not a concern.

The DMax towed and stopped it very well. The trailer was newish and has good brakes. You sure could tell it was back there, but no problems. Maybe 20 miles from quarry to job site.

My factory hitch might have been overloaded (but tongue weight was low, and I had almost sag), and the towing capacity for a ball mount trailer is 13000. Still, it did well.

So you were towing 17,500 lbs on a gooseneck or using a ball hitch? Gooseneck, yep over weight but not as bad as a conventional hitch (ball). . If it was a ball hitch it was wayyyyyy over the limit. Now I know that most people are only concerned about the potential damage to the trans on the truck.

But here's something to consider for those of us that drive any vehicle. If you are towing something that is over the capacity of the vehicle and you are involved in an accident, your insurance can deny the claim based on the fact that the tow vehicle was overloaded and not safe to drive. I have had insurance people tell me that there has been several cases that they have heard about. It is rare, but it does happen. Me thinks that when a major overload vehicle that is involved in an accident, that when the reporting agency files an accident report it will state that the tow vehicle was overloaded.

Mine has the 2 1/2 inch receiver. What is that hitch rating? I had a 20000 pound solid 2 inch (I used the adapter) 2 5/16 ball mount and ball.

Should be 1800 tongue, 18000 pull for the 2-1/2"...that's non-WD if I remember correctly?

The max towing with a conventional trailer is around 13,000.

Longbox 2500 CC is 14,500

Standard box 2500 CC 13,000

Same for 3500 single wheel.

3500 CC DRW - bumps it up to 20,000.

Sadly, buy any other comparable truck. Ford 17600, Ram 16140, GM 13000.

This is why I will probably be looking elsewhere for my next HD.

I know I have the worst setup HD for towing, but it's still pathetic that my father's 1500 has a higher towing capacity than my 2500hd.

I doubt that very much. If it is, it's only on paper and even then you are likely comparing a pre-SAE J2807 towing figure to the new SAE standards that came out a few years ago.

9800 for his 1500, 9400 for my 2500hd...so yeah, I'm right.
