High RPM's while towing.

Recommended Posts

This is my first big truck. 2016 2500HD, 6.0. Always had mid size trucks. I tow a 9500# 5th wheel. My question is, while towing up hills, the rpms get above 5000, sometimes around 5500. The engine sounds like is about to explode. Is this normal?

It is made to sing. Don't worry a single bit about high rpm. It will do it all day long no problem.

X2. Just turn the radio louder and it'll all be good!

Seriously, they're made to do that. I was out West this summer pulling around 8500 pounds and ran the RPMs up there a few times, no issues. As a matter of fact, in 100* heat, the trans temp never crossed 180 and the engine temp never moved. Thing ran beautifully and I swear it asked me for more!

Yep, let that big dog eat! GM gassers are built to scream at higher RPM's. That's where they make their horsepower. And, with all of the computer nannies, you can't hardly hurt them. Just don't get too far from a gas station, haha.

It's smart enough to not hurt itself.

(and you've discovered why many that tow like the Dmax)

Winner Winner chicken dinner! Well that and the wanting to have more than 260 mile range on fill up while towing. :)

But as everyone has said, it's built for that, no worries.
