New 2016 2500HD 6.0 gas mileage question

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a brand new 2016, 2500HD, 4X4, LTZ, with the 6.0 in it. I really like the engine and how it preforms, I did not expect great mileage but just finished my first tank of and only got 10.6 miles per gallon, 75% of this driving was on the highway. From what I have read on this site I was expecting a little better than that like maybe 12-14, is that just a dream?

Will it get a little better once broken in, only had 11 miles on the truck when I got it and now has 371 miles on it.

Any insight or opinions are welcome and thank you.

your 25% of city driving killed your mileage. Wait until you take a long trip and stay on the freeway for 300 miles and then see what your mileage is. I have never paid as close attention to my mileage in teh past as I do now with the DIC telling me instantaneous readings. My "all highway" trips net 2-4 mpg higher than regular daily use.

I had the same thoughts when I got my 6.0 last winter. I think the highest average I see on my system is about 12.6 or so. I reset Trip A everytime I fill up. If I do lots of city driving it's in the low 11's.

I also don't really drive slower for better economy. I'm sure 81mph on the interstate doesn't help, the KS interstate speed limit is 75mph. I'm sure if I cruised at 65-68mph I would see better mpg's.

I just ran a tank of E85 and it was 10.3.

10.6 is about right for the first tank...at least that is about what I got.

I also just bought a new one and am at about 1500 miles now. My driving today was about 100 miles with about 70 of it on the highway. I got about 14 MPG total.

Short trips are ugly. If you can get out and run you can average 15 to 16 on a highway trip. My highest 25 mile average is 18.2 so far, that would be on 45 to 55 MPH roads where you can coast down hills a fair amount. My lifetime average at 7,500 miles is 12 MPG, I have a 7 mile commute and idle time that kill me.

I've had my 6.0 for about 5 months now. The first 2000 miles or so I got no better the 12 city or highway. Now I have about 16000 miles on it. Typically I see about 12 city and 16 highway. My tank average is usually around 13 for combined. I reset trip A as well with each tank of gas. My best 25 mile average is 18.7

We utilize a bunch of the 2500 6.0's at work these trucks are Rock Solid and almost indestructible but as stated the gas mileage just totally sucs. When we have checked them most are in the single digits for gas mileage some in the very low single digits. They are usually loaded pretty heavy and or pulling a trailer. It seems that the guys like to use them as an office on the jobsites too and that racks up lots of idling time. Best work trucks available for serious construction work as far as I am concerned. Daily driver H%!! NO not for me LOL I will stick with my little 1500 6.2 beast.

Yep, these things despise short trips!!! I get horrible mileage around town because most of my trips are rather short. But last weekend, I drove around 400 miles with a mix of some city and mostly highway (around 60-65mph) and averaged around 16 mpg.

Given the fuel prices in my area.... $2.12 for regular and $2.70 for premium, and your 16 mpg you got for 400 miles, on regular that would be about 13 cents a mile fuel cost. For Daryl's 1500 6.2, and using premium (unless he is feeding his 6.2 Ecotec regular) along with his fuel economy display, that comes in at a hair under 11 cents a mile. Not a killer amount of difference. His average speed indicates most of his driving is highway stuff for the 400 miles. On strictly highway stuff, I can usually pull off 17-18 mpg on my 6.0L 2500, and do it on E15 fuel which is around $2.05 in my area. That is about 12 cents a mile. Only a penny more a mile compared to the 1500 6.2L on premium. When one looks at the cost per mile (which really is what makes the difference) as opposed to only mpg numbers, things may not look quite so dramatically different.

Good analysis. Highway myself I can pull pretty nice mpg. Interesting how short trips are brutal to the mileage oh well very happy with the truck otherwise. No one ever said the mpg would be great with a 6.0.

You are right. And that 6.0 is having to move a heck of a lot more pickup than a 6.2 in a 1500. But all things considered, if managed right, the cost per mile on a 6.0 2500 really isn't all that bad. Especially when compared to the Vortec engines in previous 1500's. My 2015 2500 6.0 4.10 is only about 1 mpg lower than my previous 2013 5.3 3.42 1500, across the spectrum. That actually speaks very well of the 6.0 that is moving 1000 lb more pickup.

Was told by the crew that drove it that the 2015 2500 CC 6.0 they drove down to a job in New Orleans averaged 8.6 mpg over 960 miles but was pulling a 16ft trailer double axle trailer with a welding machine gangboxes and misc. most of the time. Nothing wrong with the truck it only has a little over 100,000 miles on it. I think you will find that about average when loaded. Great work horse trucks but they do eat a lot of hay LOL.

Oh I did want to add that all our company trucks are GPS monitored so the guys have to Drive the speed limit..........

That's probably what I get loaded...I figured that was about normal.
