Tow Mirrors

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that the passenger side upper glass is not convex like a regular passenger side mirror would be, and therefore the field of view on that side is actually quite small? I find that I have to use the lower mirror all the time even though the size of that upper glass is huge compared to the non tow mirrors that are usually on a half ton. I've been messing with the angle of that upper mirror a lot and I haven't figured out the trick to it yet I guess.

Not particularly. I've noticed though, that for my height, the position of the town mirrors covers up where cross traffic would be at an intersection. Every time I come to a 4-way I have to lean forward because the mirror is the perfect size to cover up a car. My F250's tow mirrors were just a little different and easier to see around, but not sure why. They both seem to show me everything I need behind me.

yes agree, the tow mirrors require me to always check extra ... they can hide a car perfectly, and do ...

I noticed it the first day I had my truck. I have driven GM's all my life but even my last 2500 had the smaller style mirrors. They do block exactly where you need to see at an intersection turning. Whether it be a pedestrian crossing or vehicles coming from the side. And you can miss a cargo van in the blindspot on the passenger side. I actually mainly drive using the convex parts of the mirrors now. I mainly use the top parts for backing up. I couldn't put my finger on it until now as to why such a big blind spot on the passenger side. It is nice to be able to see down the sides of my trailers now though compared to my past trucks. And the led lights in them are awesome at night.

I haven't driven a truck w/ the new mirrors yet, but after the crummy telescoping towing mirrors on my '04 2500HD anything can't be worse. I like the 2011 iteration which took GM 2 tries to get right. Their angled mounting on the GMT800s looked like someone forgot the upper portion of the door angled inward to the centre of the truck.

I'm pretty sure the "towing" mirrors on my 2000 2500 didn't even have a convex portion on the pass' side. DOH!

Skeld im not familiar witht the full size towing mirror on the 2500, but I have the smaller version on my 2500 but both sides came from the factory with blind spot mirrors and there pretty good for changing lanes etc. Do the full towing mirrors have them? If not you might pick up a couple and try them they work good.

After a close call a few years ago near Ft. Wayne IN, I did a bit of fiddling when I got home I parked the truck & TT in our vacant lot. I borrowed a friend's Pontiac Vibe & parked it just to the right of the TT's rear bumper, simulating it being in the slow lane. I extended the pass' side mirror & adjusted the convex mirror so that the front of the Vibe filled the mirror.

I've always done a shoulder check when changing lanes. I'll see how things go when I get the truck.

You can track a vehicle all the time either between the convex or the upper glass, but I find it's a little disorienting sometimes when you go to check to see if the vehicle is still there and it's just barely showing in one or the other...at that point it's far enough back that you can merge by it generally, but sometimes I feel like I look with the feeling that the vehicle should be there and it isn't and it's a bit disorienting.

I'm not sure what the negative would have been to giving that upper glass a little convex also. It's silly to spend most of your time looking at the tiny convex piece on the bottom. Also I have to do that when pulling my trailer to see where the tires are at because it's an inline where the tires stick out beyond the body, and I can't see that low in the upper glass.

In retrospect I'm probably complaining too much and maybe next time I should just get the small mirrors, ha ha. But for a 2500 I felt like it would be slightly wrong to not have the tow mirrors.

Yeah, I've always wondered when you see a 3/4 ton w/ the little mirrors what the dealer was thinking. That being said I've seen 3 2016 regular cab 2500s over the last week or so & all had the small mirrors.

I will say having the little mirrors is probably nicer on a daily basis if you're not towing all the time.

I had the tow mirrors on my GMC 1500 Max Tow and they were fantastic all the time, except in drive-thrus.
