2016 SIERRA engine noise

Recommended Posts

I just picked up my truck from the dealership where it was for almost 3 weeks at the shop resolving other issues including this weird squeak/chirp coming out of the engine.

They were able to pinpoint the squeak out of from inside the engine but since it was so insignificant (apparently) GM will not pay to tear the engine out. The technician

used a stethoscope to find it.

It sounds like a pulley but they said it was not.

Does anyone else have this problem.

I doubt I would notice the type of squeak that required a stethoscope to find so I'm not sure if my truck has the same issue. You at least have the paper trail started if this persists and gets worse, GM has a list of hoops we have to go through before they'll authorize major engine work. My concern would be with your dealership having your truck for three weeks to resolve other issues.

Hi deputy,

I’m sorry to hear about this squeaking noise coming from the inside of your engine compartment. This isn't what we expect to hear from our customers, especially so early into your vehicle ownership. Please send us a private message with the details of your concern, so our team can reach out to your dealer and gather more information. We’re looking forward to hearing back from you!

Best,

Anthony J.

Sound Bite really shows how noisy overall the DI engines are............. I do hear a squeak every few seconds like it is a slowly rotating part like the serpentine belt. Do the same audio recording but spray some water on the serpentine belt and see if it goes away. Dealers are sometimes dumb about this type of thing, I will never forget the time when i bought a new truck it had like 200 miles on it and the 4whl drive would not engage. I dropped it off at the dealership and they called in a couple of days and said they had a new shift control module ordered but it would take a couple of weeks to come in so I stopped back by and picked it up. When I got home I decided to look around underneath myself and saw that my new puppy dog had decided that the wires underneath were something good to chew on. 2 minutes and some wire connectors and was all good. Just saying that these guys are sometimes not the smartest mechanics.............my guys obviously never even looked at my truck. Your guys will probably order a brand new engine and it will turn out to be the serpentine belt the entire time LOL

I have it too! It seems like it only happens after warm up then turned off and turned back on 10 minutes later. Sounds just like a pulley/belt etc?

Mookdoc6... You described exactly what mine is doing as well. After warm up it shows up then it goes away... Then suddenly comes back. I was thinking exactly the same that a pulley/belt was temporarily squealing. Hmmm? Anyone else have this diagnosed by a dealer yet.

My squeak was the water pump failing. It is a common failure. If you have a mechanics stethescope, or a long screwdriver, put it on the water pump, most likely that's the cause of your squeak.

Brianibew ... Thanks for posting. When I get back from camping this weekend I will check it out with a screwdriver.

Water pump failure common? On a '16 common?

  • 2 months later...

After being in the dealer for over a month they suspected a number one fuel injector.

They supposedly changed the injector and guess what, it was still there when I picked my truck up.

I was accused of honing in the noise. My wife heard the damn noise also and said I thought it was supposed to be fixed.

I took the truck to another dealership and they changed the serpentine belt. The next day it came back.

I'm taking it back today.

Bro, I have it too! I am 100% confident it's the water pump seals at HIGH ENGINE TEMPS! Talking to these people is like talking to walls!

I have had a very similar noise from day one. It does it when cold/damp, and will do it in certain low RPM ranges. Dealer has never been able to pinpoint it and they've tried a few things. For me, its most pronounced coming out of the drivers side wheel well, and I am fairly confident its the exhaust stack bolted up to the manifold. Pretty sure that's a cat right there, and its making the noise. Dealer won't replace it since they are not confident its that, and apparently its no fun for them to replace to take a shot at it.
