Shock Replacement Info

Recommended Posts

My 2012 Sierra has 52k miles on it and it has the factory Rancho shocks on it.

I was looking at the Monroe 139105, FRONT http://www.monroe.com/en-US/e-catalog/139105

Monroe 911533 REAR http://www.monroe.com/en-US/e-catalog/911533/

I think the Monroe's will be a softer ride than the Ranchos. Correct?

Do you think the Monroe's will change the height?

Will the Monroe's lower the rear more when I tow my boat?

Thanks :happysad:

I bought these monroes about 2 years ago for my 2011 Sierra Z71 crew which had about 50k miles on it at the time. The ride was more comfortable but with control than the worn out oem shocks. Especially on highway it would react much better to hitting small imperfections or recovering from a dip or crown in the road at speed. If you want to barrel down dirts roads at 50mph, these might not be your shock, you might want the bilsteins, but for around town crusing and a 'I have a 4x4 because I prefer not to get stuck', this is a great shiock and I'd buy it again. 20k on them now. No perceptible height change to me. Finally, shocks can change the height of your car. They usually have threaded bodies but are more for sports cars.

I replaced the rear shocks on my 2014 CC SLT Z71 with Gabriel Ultra Shocks. Cheapest things I could find but when they came in I was a bit shocked by how beefy they were really looked like a quality product at approx 20 bucks each LOL. Factory Ranchos were shot at 50k never did swap out the front ones just traded the silly thing in with 61,000 miles. Pics attached of the rusty Ranchos I cut the shield off so you can see the leaks. Appear to be pretty poor quality.

that is a strut, not a shock

My mistake, I thought the 2012 had struts up front. Didn't realize you were only talking about the rear shocks. You are right shocks don't raise the ride height.

I was just looking at the Monroe part number from the OP. It is a strut. $152 on amazon. I paid close to $115 for the Bilstein strut each and paid Goodyear $319 to install them both including the alignment. So yes shocks don't raise height but the Bilsteins 5100 will go on the 2012 and raise the front.

Since we're on the subject, I have a couple of questions about the Bilstein front struts:

Did the 5100's raise your height at the "0" setting?

Have been talking to Bilstein, directly, about the best option for my '08 Z-71 Avalanche. The application engineer swears the 4600 HD version would be better for my vehicle, than the 5100 series; however, there are some Avalanche owners who say they lost at least an inch of height when they went from stock to the 4600's.

Am on the fence about which way to go. Thanks.
