Largest tires on stock 20's leveled Sierra

Hey all,

 

Here is a photo of my 2015 Sierra SLE that's been leveled with the 2.5" Pro Comp kit. I love the stock 20's that came with this truck, so i'd like to keep them for a little while, i just want to know what are the biggest tires I could fit on here and not rub? I'm thinking 33's but not sure how wide? I'm new to trucks, so forgive my ignorance!

Look around this forum a little more. There's tons of threads about this topic, and tons of pictures too. I'll give you a short answer though...you can run 285/55/20, 295/55/20, or 275/60/20 without any trouble at all. And, 275/65/20 or 305/55/20 will fit too. The 275's might rub on the fender liner, and the 305's might rub on the sway bar. Those issues will depend on the specific brand/tread of tire you choose. Many guys run those without any trouble at all. There's also a few guys running 295/60/20 with a level on stock rims. That should be enough to get you started, haha.

I have the exact same questions as CaptainMcFunk... Could you provide a little more data on which brands will rub/not rub with a 305/55/R20 or 275/65/R20 setup?

 

In particular I'd like to know about:

- BFG All Terrain A/T KO2

- Nitto Terra Grappler G2

- Toyo Open Country AT2 (Extreme and non-Extreme)

 

Any thoughts on whether 285/60/R20 or 295/60/R20 would rub too?

Well, as a general rule, mud terrains will rub before all terrains do. The carcass of the tire is made to a specific size, so an AT tire with 16/32 of tread and rounded shoulder lugs will clear easier than an MT of the same size with 20/32 of tread and big, blocky shoulder lugs. Another general rule is that BFG's tend to run smaller than other brands, so you should be able to clear those in 305/55 or 275/65 with a level. 285/60 should clear with a level, regardless. 295/60/20 in Nitto G2 or Toyo AT2 will be close. Most tire shops will let you test fit a tire before you buy a set.

Seems like 275/60/20 and 285/60/20 are a non-issue and should easily clear in any AT tire brand.

 

What are your thoughts on 295/55/20? I think the 305's will clear the wheel well, but will most likely rub on the sway bars at full lock (at least in reverse) according to what I have read.

 

Also looks like I will be safe with the BFG in a 275/65/20. I would love to hear from anyone out there that has rubbing with this tire/size and a level kit.

It is very doubtful that I will ever be towing or carrying heavy loads. My top priority (after agressive looks) are ride, noise and handling on regular roads.

No problem, man. And yes, 275/60/20 and 285/60/20 will clear easily. A 295/55/20 should clear easily too. That would be a good alternative to the 305's if you're worried about rubbing the sway bar. The 295's will look like 33's to most people. And, you're right, a 275/65/20 should clear the fender liner in a BFG, since they run small.

This was really helpful. I'm still weighing up my options for tires, but at least I'm better informed now, thanks to you.

 

Do you think that an XL vs regular P or SL rated tire is preferred? Seems like the XL is between a P/SL and D/E.

No problem. That's what this forum is for! :thumbs: And, some guys run XL rated tires to support the extra weight of towing or hauling. If you're running empty most of the time, a standard P rated tire will be fine,

Great. I'm still looking at options... I did find out that my dealer is installing the 2" RC front level kit (the one designed for the Denali magnetic ride).

 

It looks like 275/60/R20 is the most cost effective and fuel efficient option. I'm not finding many A/T P, SL or XL rated tires in 285s or 295s, and I'd prefer to avoid the extra weight of an E rated tire.

Soooooo after all the research I decided on the 275/60R20 as well. Bad news is, Duratracs rub the carpet liner. It's very minor and easily fixed with a trim or a zip tie, but it rubs. Every other tire I've read about in that size doesn't rub.

 

Good news is (and I won't know for sure since my odometer/speedometer is off until I get my Diablo) but my gas mileage hasn't really suffered much at all.

I run BFG A/T KO 2 on my '15 Sierra in 275 x 65 x 20 stock SLT 20" rims with a 2" Supreme Suspension level kit on the front. It's a 34" tall tire with no rubbing anywhere whatsoever. BFG A/T KO's are a great looking tire and perform great, ride quiet as a stock radial, and last a long long time. They do run a little narrower than other manufactures. From the side view my truck looks totally bad A$$. However from the rear they are ridiculously skinny....to me it looks really stupid.....being such a beefy looking truck to begin with and with a 34" tire - the width of the 275 65 makes me sick. I am swapping them out for 305 x 55 x 20 BFG A/T KO tommorrow. I have several friends with that same tire on stock 20's and only slightly rub the inner wheel well liner at full lock which is easily fixed with a zip tie pulling the liner back about 1/2". I will post pics.

Looking for info for my 2017 GMC Sierra with 2.5” motofab leveling kit. I want to keep stock rims but go with larger tire. What is the largest tire I can go? I have read some people say run any larger than stock you will come in contact with the UCA on the 2017s. Is this true? Looking at Ridge Grappler or Wildpeak AT3w in 275/60R20, 275/65R20, or 285/60R20.
