Unsuccessful Trans Gauge Activation at Dealership

Recommended Posts

Well, that's the most expensive carwash I've ever gotten. Took my '04 Avalanche 1500 Z71 into the dealership and asked them to attempt to activate the transmission temp gauge that was added to the OE cluster. Talking to the service writer and technician, they seemed very "by the book" and said the programmer matched it to the VIN number, and if the VIN said it didn't originally come with the gauge, it wouldn't activate it. At first, the writer said he might waive the diagnostic fee because it was unsuccessful. Well, so much for that. Still charged me full $125. Well, at least it's the cleanest it's ever been. I knew it was a gamble from the start when I added the gauge to the cluster that didn't originally have one. But from what I've read here and other forums, it seemed like there was a pretty good chance it would work.

If any of you are, or could recommend a technician in Southern California that thinks he can do this for less than $200, I'm all ears. My next step is contacting one of those mail-order cluster companies to see if I can ship it off, or they'll swap out the core for an HD cluster with a working trans gauge. Thanks in advance.

Sorry you had to go thru that. When it comes to adding things onto the vehicle that did not come with the vehicle from the factory, I've observed the same thing you did, dealers tend to not want to deal with that, with some pressure by GM not to do that as well.

Yeah. Kind of stinks. I knew there was no guarantee, but it didn't seem like they really tried that hard. I've reached out to U.S. Speedo in Flint, Michigan to see if they're willing to do a core-swap deal, or if they think they'd be able the activate it. Thankfully, truck isn't my daily driver, so it's no big deal if it's out of commission for a few days.

Only time I've seen this work is if you have the Allison transmission to begin with. The other transmissions don't always have the temperature sensor. All the electronics is already on the circuit board if you add a motor and change the facia, but if the cluster doesn't grt the info via GMLan it ain't going to work.

I had an '04 K1500 Silverado, all I did was swap out a cluster from an HD and the trans temp gauge worked, it was plug-n-play, no reprogramming needed.

All the GMT800 trucks have a trans temp sensor, but only certain models had the gauge in the cluster.

Yeah. I'm hoping U.S. Speedo is willing to do a core swap for an HD cluster. Problem is, I've put $200+ into upgrading the original cluster with LEDs and the new faceplate + trans gauge. Would be a shame for all that money to go down the drain. Oh well. Lesson learned.

You can update the programming in this cluster a board swap is not necessary. There is no way for the dealership to do it with SPS. I have done more Trans Activation then I can count.

Thanks. I'm going to see what U.S. Speedo says. If they want too much, I may take you up on it.

Dredging up an old topic but this is sort of related.

I just 2001 2500 HD. Trans temp gauge on the cluster appropriately warms up and moves. But when I use foseal diagnostic app and plug-in device, I can't get trans temp to come up. The option on the app comes up but it just has a dash as if no data is given for that.

Shouldn't I be getting a transmission temperature through the app?

depends on the app, some have features that others don't. I have the foseal as well and use torque pro (not free) but my truck is a 1500 so I couldn't tell you if that app will read the transmission temp.

I also use the pro version of torque. What I don't understand is why am I Dash cluster is showing transmission temp but it won't come up through the OBD2
