1996 Spider Injector

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of getting a 1996 C2500 heavy 350 CI. The engine runs a little ruff. The previous owner said he has done nothing to the truck but oil changes and drive it for the last 10 year. I plan on doing the complete secondary ignition system but from what I have been reading the Spider injectors are a common issue. There is no check engine light on. The truck has 200K miles on it. Should I just do the Spider? I was on Rockauto and there is a lot of variety in spider prices. Most seem to be MPFI conversions, is this the standard now? Any brands that has a bad name?

To my surprise he said it still has the original fuel pump also.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to change the spider injectors...just make sure you do the fuel regulator as well. As far as the pump, I would get a fuel pressure reading to see if the pump is still putting out the right pressure. If it is, leave it alone. If its a bit on the low side, I would change out the pump. Change that fuel filter FIRST. If he has never changed it, that could be the reason it runs rough. However, with that many miles on the engine, I would change the timing chain set as well as the oil pump. Just to refresh the engine.

My truck has 205k still on original spider injectors. Runs great especially with a blackbear tune. I was going to do MPFI but did plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, fuel filter and all 4 O2 sensors (180k tuneup) Also replaced original cats with flow master high flow mode. Truck runs excellent now so I just left spider injectors.

Of course it had the VORTEC intake manifold gasket leak so if your truck is slowly using antifreeze, that could be causing it to run rough and is common on VORTEC.

It may be original fuel pump if he never ran it low on fuel causing pump to run hot and slowly killing it.

Never did fuel pressure regulator. May do that :-)
