Looks like I get to be a GM guinea pig again...

Recommended Posts

Truck is back in the shop for the 4th time for a possible 5th HMI failure. This time after working my way up the chain via the executive complaint department and with my dealers help GM was able to get a field service engineer on site this time as well. Seems when the dealer has to work thru the GM TAC line it can takes days of going back and forth with trouble shooting steps. With the FSE on site they have direct access to the engineers to try and get the issue found and resolved.

They found that the HMI did not have a hardware failure this time, it is purely a software issue causing the problem. The HMI and another module need a software update to resolve the issue from what the FSE told the service manager. The HMI update I am getting it the one that the Chief Engineer told me wouldn't be released until Q1 2017. I will be the first customer to have it flashed into the HMI module.

Should get the truck back today and hopefully will see if it resolves the issues or not. I hope it does, this is getting old going to the dealer every 2 weeks for a replacement HMI module.

Uh, for the new to GM truck owners, what is the "HMI" and "TAC?"

HMI is the Interface Module for the Radio, Navigation etc. GM TAC is the Technical Assistance Center. Looks like he is having software issues with his.

As they said. When the HMI has issues it can kill off the infotainment screen. The HMI also houses the Bluetooth module as well, so when the HMI dies or has software issues you lose the infotainment screen, the BT functions and it can cause other issues as it can break the communication link on the CANBUS network that the modules use to talk back and forth.

When my HMI would act up it would turn the infotainment screen off, then it would kick my phone off of the BT system. Then the HMI would re-boot and the screen would come back on and then my phone would reconnect back to the system. When the HMI would fail or die I would lose the screen and it would stay off, eventually it would cause issues with the radio (which then can only be controlled by the steering wheel controls), the only way to change the radio presets is thru the dash screen. You wouldn't have access to any other media options other than the radio. Eventually the HMI failure would cause the radio to quit working until the truck was turned off and then restarted.

Update us on whether your bluetooth streaming works on the new HMI! I still have to hardwire my phone to listen to music.

I will, if I ever get the truck back. Dealer still has it due to the ineptness of a GM engineering employee. The Field Service Engineer called this in weeks ago to get the engineering department to send him the update out ahead of time. GM closes for the 2 weeks of Christmas into New Year. Seems the engineer never sent the update out. So the FSE was supposed to have the USB update on Tuesday, nope never showed. Called the Engineer who said ops I forgot to send it. I will send it out today. Wednesday morning comes around and still no USB drive. FSE calls the engineer again, engineer is like crap it is still on my desk. I will overnight it to you.

Now we get hit with 3"-6" of snow that pretty much has the city shut down so the odds of me getting the truck back today are very slim. All because an engineer at GM corporate cant do his job that was asked of him over 2 weeks ago when me, the dealer, the FSE, and GM Executive worked together to get this setup so we would be down minimal time with out the truck.

Top it off, I have to work since I work for the electric company and am part of outage restoration. Thankfully the wife is going out of town and I will use her AWD Audi. Still really irritating to say the least.

I have my 2016 Denali in for HMI issue right now. Started out as intermittent, now is full blown just black screen of death. They are pulling my dash apart now, supposedly have to get a serial number off of the unit before they can even order the part?

TJay...Have they given you any indication as to why this is happening?

It was hinted that it is a software issue causing the problem. I had the same issues with the black screen, dealer kept throwing new HMI modules at mine but the issue never went away. I emailed an engineer who said there would be a Q1 2017 update to fix it. The FSE looked at my truck and said my HMI module is fine and is not hardware bricked, just software causing the problem.

I am going to be the 1st customer to get the new update, provided the engineer from GM mailed it out next day air yesterday like he was supposed to do. I should know later on today.

  • 2 weeks later...

New to the forum, hello....My 2016 just started doing this this week. Noticed a momentary blank screen, then it came back on. Just thought I was seeing things, thanks for the heads up. Could save me a lot of time and hassle as I had a lot of electrical issues with my 2009 Canyon. Dealer was great to work with, but they had to call in a tech to cure.
