Why so few women in auto sales

Recommended Posts

Being sick and tired of slimy sales men, and having often found women better to deal with. I went specifically looking for a GMC dealer with sales lady.

Well are they ever rare!

A few are out there if I look hard enough....but why so few is my question.

If women make up approximately 50% of the population, why are they only about 1% of the sales people.

I bought my house, car, boat etc with women.

It does seem some brands like say BMW have more ladies in sales than other brands do.

I guess it's easier for a guy to lie than a woman. I tried being a salesman and I guess I was too unselfish. Especially if you wanted something specific they either was able to get it or they weren't and I wasn't the type to try to talk them into something they wouldn't want. Seems like people do more research now a days so it's rare for someone to show up not caring what make or model they get as long as it has certain features or certain things. So most know what they want. I know if I'm buying I'm picky and hardheaded so there's no need to try to talk me into something I don't want so I wouldn't want to talk someone else into something they wouldn't really want. An example was a couple wanted a Charger, not even an R/T, they were fine with a V6. But, they owed too much on their Nissan Altima (I think that's what they had) and their credit wasn't that good so they couldn't afford what the banks offered. So I just didn't try to talk them into something else. But, I know there's one guy at the dealership I worked at that would lie to you in a second and he was one of the top salesmen. One big lie was when selling an F150, but it was just a base XL with rims and small lift. He lied to the guy and sold it to him for a lot higher price than they had it for on the website. He told him that the price on the website was before the mods they did, which was a lie. Last I knew you had to sell for the advertised price, or less and that guy was just gullible I guess and wanted the truck bad enough to not think about.

I thought I would be good at it since I'm a car/truck person and I tend to be pretty good at talking people into stuff. But, in auto sales you have to be the type to care about what you make and not worry about the customer. All a salesperson does is make you basically fall in love with a vehicle and then talk you into the vehicle for a certain price and payment. They don't care if you can't really afford it or not. Some might care more, but I think that's rare. You also have to realize they work for commission. The dealership I worked at, you got paid 7.50/hour, but if you made real money in sales they take that pay away and you just get commission. So far from what I've read selling a brand new vehicle only paid the salesman $100. The dealer may pay $200 or $300 for an older new vehicle that's actually a year or 2 old. The used vehicles is where a salesman makes their money, real good money if done right.

I'm part of the 80% that doesn't make it as an auto salesperson and I'm fine with that. I thought I could be good at it and I found out I wasn't. I guess I just like to help people and aren't too selfish, even when it comes to money and commission.

Back when I worked at a Buick/Pontiac/GMC/Jeep/Eagle/Subaru dealer, we had two women sales people...one made it, the other didn't.

From my point of view, it's about how agressive sale people are...the one of the women was timid, let the customer come to her, the other was agressive and went after the customer. And when dealing with men that are typically agressive by nature, the less agressive get pushed out...even other men. The one that made it was there until they closed the doors some years later.

It's the nature of the business, it takes a certain personality for sales. I couldn't do it, that I know for sure.

For the same reason you don't see men working at the local Victoria's Secret.

I would think a dealership would be proactive in having female sales staff. Primarily to cater to female customers and make the buying experience more relaxed for them. Could be wrong in that regard. Just seems on the surface to be a good deal.

I search the female out if I can find one. There's usually no BS no alfa male BS. I usually buy what's been on the lot the longest for deals, no direct sales for me.

But she has to put up with the alfa male bs all day everyday if working in a dealership. Which is likely why they are far & few between.

Only female sales person I ever tried to buy something from was real slow about returning phone calls and email. Turns out she was the caregiver for her dying husband and had like 4 young children I sent her a crisp hundred dollar bill even though I bought at a another dealership. Try to have some compassion and empathy you know damn good and well if a woman is trying to sell cars/trucks (Chit Job from Hell) that she most likely has some major issues........ as far as wanting more Females in the car/truck sales business HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND? LOL They do make excellent Real Estate Agents though.
