Chevrolet launched the all-new 2018 Traverse today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The major themes of this full redesign are more cargo room, more third-row space, and safety technology improvements. Available D-Optic LED headlamps will be a welcome improvement and may help the Traverse earn a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from IIHS.

Chevy claims the new Traverse will have the most passenger and cargo volume (98.5 cubic feet) in its class. The second-row Smart Slide® seats have been improved. These seats now split and fold, and the outboard two seats can tip forward while a forward-facing child seat is left in place (presumably with the child not in the seat). A third-row middle seat means that the Traverse will join the Toyota Highlander in being 8-passenger capable on trims that have the 3-seat bench in the middle (instead of captains' chairs).

New trims include a black-out themed RS and a High Country which features Loft Brown Leather with suede accents. The High Country will also feature premium content and technology. We noticed the cool lifting dash cubby we know from the larger GM SUVs. Was this part of Traverse in the past?

The RS will have an exclusive 2.0L Turbocharged gasoline engine with more torque than the new 3.L engine found on other trims. Both are paired to a nine-speed transmission. Like it or not, all Traverse engines are now equipped with stop-start technology. Both front-wheel drive and AWD will be available. The new Traction Traction Mode Select allows a driver to tailor power and grip to the driving situation, and can decouple the rear-drive portion fully, for better fuel economy.

Like all GM products, technology continues to be an emphasis. Everything we have seen before is available, plus USB ports in all three rows. GM Summarized the active safety with this rundown:

-Surround Vision
-D-Optic LED headlamps (standard on High Country and Premier)
-Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
-Front Pedestrian Braking
-Forward Collision Alert
-Low and High-Speed Forward Automatic Braking

A teen driver mode is also available (and we reported on this yesterday evening in the Terrain summary). Chevy says "Teen Driver is standard, allowing parents to set certain controls and review performance in order to help encourage better driving habits, even when parents are not in the vehicle."

The all-new Traverse arrives in the fall of 2017 as a 2018 model year vehicle.

Looks more rugged, like a Tahoe, I like it.

I honestly prefer the look of this to the Tahoe. Has a more cohesive design. If they had called this the Trailblazer, offered it with a 5.3L, RWD + 4WD transfer case, that'd be my new truck in a heart beat. A proper competitor to the Grand Cherokee/Durango.

It actually pains me how good looking it is and it's not available with a really memorable drive train. Where the hell is the twin turbo V6??? They better be saving it for a Sport/SS version.

I think this is a winner. I have been looking/waiting for the wife's next SUV to replace our '10 MDX and this will get a serious look. I was really disappointed in the new Acadia Denali getting smaller and every other 3rd row SUV in the segment just felt or is small. Up until this announcement I was thinking we were left purchasing another MDX...not that that is a bad thing but I am partial to GM. Now I just have to convince the other half that she can do without the "Acura prestige".

Point out to her that the Acura prestige carries over to the repair/servicing cost. Based on the guys that have had Acura's at my office, it was not a Honda like experience to take them in for any work. They ended up dumping them and going back to domestic SUV's.

I totally agree on this! We/she has experienced the repair/service cost. I also find the Honda/Acura dealers here to be very full of themselves and try to "sell" all types of services to her unless I am present or they communicate with me. This is also why I am partial to GM dealers I use. They know if I am there I am only there for exactly what I am requesting...no more...no less. Thankfully, with that being said the MDX and TSX we have owned have been good to us and only required minimal dealer service.

I owned one of the original Traverses. Wanted to try a "non-truck" for a while. Came back to trucks in 2 years, but I do still kinda miss that large crossover sometimes. The technology is getting crazy. Wondering when we will see full self driving units from GM? GM seems to be doing a slow approach to this type of vehicle, though faster than other big name auto makers in some areas. I like this "test out the easy stuff first" approach. Also interesting that GMC will smaller on it's mid-size where Chevy seems to have gone bigger.
