Entertainment Display High Frequency Sound

AnonUser

Question

My truck (16 Canyon, trailmax) has had a constant high frequency sound with entertainment display when turned on.

The sound only occurs when the display is on and goes away when selecting "Turn Display Off" in the settings menu. Additionally, the sound goes down significantly when automatic nighttime lights kick on after dark.

Here is a YouTube video showing the issue with a spectrum analyzer showing frequency spike when screen is turned on:

(sound is degraded in the recording).

It has been making the sound since we purchased it (used, 3 months old/3k mi). At the time, the dealership salesman said the issue would be covered under warranty. We got that it would be fixed as part of the sale.

After the sale concluded, the service department looked into the issue. Service consultant and salesman both reported that they could hear the sound. However the older certified technician cannot hear it due to age and degraded hearing. Therefore they turned away the service with a "could not replicate". This is despite the fact that others have reported hearing it.

I doubt if you could hear 13Hz - maybe you meant 13KHz which would make more sense. Now as for source of it. There are several areas where oscillators are used however the backlight power supply is probably your culprit. What you are hearing, and measuring is probably a harmonic of the main frequency - so that leads me to think that their is an RF shield that is either not working properly, or missing. This also tracks with your comments about day/night and display off descriptions.

There may be some issues with replacing this unit - however I would think that at the least they could replace just the display itself - not the whole infotainment system.
