Anybody ever race their truck in 4WD LO?

Recommended Posts

So tonight I played around with 4WD LO on the street. From 0 to 30, I don't think there is anything that could keep up except an AWD Tesla. The shifts are Very firm. It shifts very quickly and a couple times I think it hit the Rev limit. I don't think it got into 7th or 8th gear. I was too scared to go past 40, so can't say much for faster speeds.

I did as a kid, as long as it's straight line, guys launch in 4wd with a lot more power than you. The only thing that low puts into the mix is a set of reduction gears in the transfercase, it actually takes load off the transmission because of that...the tires will break loose well before you really stress anything. If you do it often, it will eventually stretch the transfercase chain...

For the record, I ran a warm 440 in a 4wd 86 Ramcharger and my buddy ran a hot 440 in an 81 Dodge 4wd stepside (essentially a Warlock)...both with NP241 transfercases. I could eat a 5.0 Mustang (THE car at that time) red light to red light, Jim could roast 33 inch street tires from a dead stop in 4wd (all four tires). Yeah, these were pavement pounders...we never had an issue in many miles and many years (other than constant tweaking for that last little bit).

Would I do it now, no...I plan on having this truck for many more years and there are too many soccer mom's that drive fast minivans...

I'd try reverse. :)

the automatics take away from the real four low, so the ops post.. it seems legit.

my dad took his 2016 down the road, did not know he was in four low.

he called me wondering why he did not get past 60.

I had to tell him pull back in the 4x4 lever, not all the way forward.

all the way forward is 4 lo. :)

With a 5 speed, I'd use four low to tug at a 17000 pound peterbilt stuck in some ruts in the driveway.

I can hop out of the cab and walk past its idling in first gear...crawling along.

automatics, they really leave a blurry overlapping realm of genuine purpose.

The torque multiplication of the auto has its advantages. Plus less burning clutch smell! ;)
