Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to start this thread as a continuation from my DL8 to DL3 Mirror Conversion here.

http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/190736-2016-silverado-lt-dl8-to-dl3-mirror-conversion-finally-complete-3/page-1

Based on the 6 months of research in the above thread, feedback from many of the members here, and observing behavior of other member's experience...

I am now able to officially offer a Plug and Play Harness Solution for those that want to upgrade their Standard DL8 Mirrors to the DL3 Mirrors on their 2014* - 2017 Silverado/Sierra Trucks (LT/SLE Trims).

DL8 Mirrors - Power Adjust, Manual Fold, and Heated
DL3 Mirrors - Power Adjust, Power Fold, Heated, Auto Dim (Driver's Side), Turn Signal and Puddle Lamps

This has been tested on the following models:

2014* - Silverado/Sierra LT/SLE - 1500* (Known issue with Puddle Lamps - Diode mod workaround required)

2015 - 2017 Silverado/Sierra LT/SLE

Please see Vehicle Acceptability for Retrofit Document Here. Keep in mind that this document is intended for Towing Mirrors, but based on feedback, they seem to follow similar acceptability requirements.

There might be additional wiring needed for other trucks. If you decide to purchase the harness anyway, I can assist as much as I can. However, there is no guarantee that it'll work without BCM/Memory Module Calibration (and if that's even possible), or additional wiring for missing circuits in the inline door hinge connector. Also, if you are outside of the compatibility requirements, I would need some additional information/photos of your truck connectors to determine if this harness will work or not.

The Plug and Play Harness will be pinned for the following functionality.

Turn Signal
Puddle Lamps
Power Fold***
Auto Dim (Driver's Side)****

***For Power Fold, you will need a new Mirror Adjust/Power Fold Switch - Part # 23154702.

****For Auto Dim (Driver's Side) - You will need to add a Auto Dim Rear View Mirror AND run the additional (4) Circuits needed to the X51L Fuse Panel and X61A Junction Box. Please see thread here for details.

http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/192050-a10-inside-rearview-auto-dimming-mirror-conversion-dd8/?hl=a10+mirror

The Harness Set for both Driver and Passenger is $225 Shipped (lower 48) via PayPal (as Family and Friends). I ship USPS Priority Mail 2-3 Day Shipping. Once you receive the Harnesses, Install, Test, and Confirm all is operational, you have the option of shipping me your Stock DL8 Harness for a $40 Core Refund.

I can not say enough about how great pgamboa and his custom harness's are.

Pgamboa's custom harness are exactly like the factory harness. You can not tell that it has been modified at all. It truly is a simple Plug & Play solution with no splices needed! It really is a the best option for adding DL3 mirrors to your truck. The install is really easy and only takes about 2 hours to knock out both doors. I absolutely love having the turn signals and puddle lamps.

+2 for Phil and his amazing work. He's always willing to go the extra mile and help out fellow members on here. The hardest part of this conversion is sourcing the mirrors for a good price. Using these conversion harnesses are a no brainer. As soon as I get some free time and some decent weather, Phil's electrical guru knowledge will be incorporated into my truck.

Agreed. Get some mirrors along with these harnesses and it's really a piece of cake upgrading to the DL3 mirrors. One of the best mods for the LT trucks imo.

I want to add that pgamboa does some very fine work on these harnesses. With his harness I fixed my "self wired" DL8 to DL3 conversion mod. I was very careful and soldered my connections but ended up with an intermittent working turn signal. I believe my issue was with the wire taps under the dash. For me working under there was painfully hard.

I was able to eliminate the problematic wire tap with his re-pinned harness and no longer have an intermittent working turn light. You can't tell his work from the original and it uses the manufactures harness that just eliminated a couple of wires.

To me I don't understand why GM would design several different harness when the connections are the same just some pins are wired in some and not wired in others.

The swapping of these harness's are so much easier than self wiring, especially when it comes to working under that darn dashboard, LOL.

I'm sure it won't take him long to figure out the bug with the 2014 year and the puddle lights.

Thank you Phil!

Does this work on WTs with no power mirrors?

I would need to see the inline door connector to see how WT trims are pinned out.

If you are able to remove the door connector and snap a photo of the body side connector, I'd be more than happy to look into it.

It would look like this:

This is with the connector pulled out of the jamb

And a picture with it in the jamb:

I would also need to explore the harness that's in the door panel as well. If you have no power Mirrors, you wouldn't have the connector that would normally go to the power mirror switch.

When I first bought my new GMC 2015 2500hd SLE it came with small mirrors that only had power glass adjust and heated defrost. I wanted the new power folding tow mirrors with front amber lights and LED back up lights, and turn signals but knew I would have to wire them up and wanted to keep everything stock as possible, that's when I found Phil aka pgamboa!!! I contacted Phil and he was able to make me a stock harness with all the missing pins and wires that I needed to make my mirrors work like stock!!! He was extremely helpful and very responsive with any questions I had. I am extremely happy with the overall look and performance of my new mirrors. Thank you again Phil!! Don't hesitate to order a harness from pgamboa you will not regret it!! 1e588c35127055d9b3bc9c2a2297f4a4.jpg4759310209cbc2f873111b9c2fc3ae50.jpg659a359239786e6bfef0ed6ca6ea70e8.jpg

I have just successfully upgraded from standard DL8 mirrors(heated and power adjust), to aftermarket tow mirrors from eBay.

My truck is a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Double Cab, Standard Box

After much thinking about whether I really wanted to go with the look of tow mirrors and also how I would make it work knowing that they wouldn't be plug and play, I bit the bullet. I looked all around for some tow mirrors that I would be happy with. I found multiple listings on eBay for a really low price ranging from $195-220. I picked out a set that had a blacked out clearance light as I don't like the orange lense. I will put the listing below. In addition to finding the mirrors I wanted, I also had been reading up on the forum of how I wanted to make it work. I came across a pgamboa who has been helping the community by making and selling a harness that allows people to convert from the standard DL8 mirrors to the fancy DL3 setup. His harness makes the conversion plug and play for the new mirrors. Knowing his harness was for non-tow mirrors, I reached out to him and asked about making one to work with tow mirrors. He took it upon himself to make a harness to work for me even though he doesn't have actual tow mirrors to test. After fast shipment, I had received the new harnesses and I swapped them with my old ones which he will give money back to you for sending back to him. Since I had the door panel off in order to install the new harness, I went ahead and installed a product called "fatmat"(similar to dynamat) to quiet up my ride and improve my speaker sound. Anyway, I replaced my harnesses even though I hadn't yet gotten my tow mirrors delivered yet. My plan was to leave my stock mirrors on until I had my tow mirror in and I planned on getting the chrome caps on them color matched to my truck. Once the mirrors arrived, I popped the chrome caps off and stripped the chrome using muriatic acid. This works very well to completely strip chrome plating on plastic, and it does it in a matter of hours. While stripping the chrome, I decided I better plug them in to test them out. To my disappointment, only the turn signal and power adjust worked. The courtesy lights and clearance lights did not work. I contacted pgamboa again and got his input. We diagnosed the issue to be in my trucks X500 door harness connector. It was missing 2 pins necessary for the courtesy lights and clearance lights to get signal. His harness was pinned for them but my truck was not. To remedy this issue, he sent me a set of wires for both the passenger and driver side connectors. Once I received them, I used his instructions and guidance to insert the wires into the necessary slots to make the connections needed. During this process I had my mirror caps all stripped and taken into my local Chevy dealership to have them color match paint the caps. Finally I got the caps popped back on and the mirrors installed on the truck and I am extremely happy with the look and result.

A huge thanks to Phil (pgamboa)!! He is a great community member and he is always around the forum helping others. He took me on as a customer and helped me through every step of the way. He has put numerous man hours into his research for these harness and just in helping me getting my mirrors working and functioning. I can't thank him enough for the help and highly recommend him for anyone needing help with a tow mirror conversion or the regular DL8 to DL3 conversion.

Thank you for the kind words and compliments!

First off - Let me start by saying what a Beautiful looking truck you have there!

This upgrade definitely had our work cut out for us (well, mainly for you) :). This was certainly a collaborative effort to achieve this upgrade.

Great write up!

For anyone looking to perform a Towing Mirror or DL3 Mirror upgrade, I cannot stress how important it is to help me understand what all will be needed. This upgrade required additional work beyond installing the Custom Plug and Harness. It required taking the body side - inline door connector in the door hinge and adding pins to it. It also included running these wires to various places under the dash and tapping into the BCM. So if you are a candidate that missing circuits - be prepared :)

Nice work!

I'll be reaching out for that chrome stripper stuff. I am looking to either swap my grill to a black painted Z71 Grille or strip and color match like you did. Might be doing the same to my headlight trim.
