ChevySilveradoLTZ
Hi! My 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LTZ runs great and drive great. Love it. One problem though... my steering wheel locks up and I will get 3-4 quick messages saying Intellik, stabillik, and park assist off. (Spelling is off for sure because I can't read them in time) it happens when my foot is off the acceleration and turning. It ONLY occurs in my friends neighborhood entrances!! Weird!! Never happens anywhere else. Usually the steering wheel locks up for 2-3 sec but today it lock up and I went up on the curb and the engine shut off. I drove home fine though. Any thoughts??
Colossus
So just to confirm, the steering wheel is locking up as in won't move at all from left to right while you are driving? Or does it feel like the power steering craps out and you have to turn the wheel with a lot of force? Also, you stated that it only occurs in the entranceways to your friends neighborhood? Never anywhere else? Makes me wonder if the vehicle is receiving some sort of electronic interference from something in that area that is interfering with the various components on your truck. As silly as it might sound, it has been known to happen. I've heard of vehicles cutting out completely but only in a particular spot. Not manufacturer specific. Welcome to the forums. Heavy 5.7
You must have ballz of steel. If that POS did that to me once I would drive it no more.
ChevySilveradoLTZ
Thanks for your reply. Yes it won't move left to right for approximately 2-3 sec. I just jiggle it and it will undo itself. It almost seems to turn itself then lockup. Also, yes it has only occurred in his neighborhood. However, today it locked up for about 15 sec with a shutdown(truck turned off) it drives great every where else!
ChevySilveradoLTZ
Haha. Yeah well it drives fine EVERYWHERE else and it's a fine looking truck!
oburgtiger
What's unique about your friend's neighborhood entrance? Is the turn tighter in one direction than other turns? Is there a large bump? Take a service tech on a ride-along.
barry G
There is other threads here on this same year and problems.. interesting read: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/155369-power-steering/ one was interference on data linking. that is plain crazy. Steering should be all by itself on any vehicle. if it were me and my torture on electrons, I'd try simple things.. maximum right to left, find center.. reset. my dad's 2016 is impressive. it has been in 17 below and lots of cold already. No signs of anything weird. Oddly enough, I was barreling down a northern maine highway, in my 1996. Tundra wind at its 50mph finest sideways at the truck, and loved my old steering box reactions. Even had dust devils in the mirror off the back of the bed. the feel is gone today... I'd go dealer right away, there is known issues. ChevySilveradoLTZ
Thanks Barry G. I plan on going to the dealership ASAP. I hope its something super minor! There is a transmission cooler recall on the truck and I wonder if that has anything to do with it? But it happens in the same place when it happens! ChevySilveradoLTZ
I want to add im in Louisiana- not below freezing. It's not power steering that turns off, the wheel LOCKS up.
ChevySilveradoLTZ
It is somewhat of a narrow opening. I guess it happens when I turn the steering wheel hard and all the way? I'll play around with it to test it tomorrow when I drop him off. It really isn't a hard turn though because there is enough room to veer out and then turn but any things possible I guess
michigan2500hd
This happened in a truck my dad was riding in this summer. It was a 2014 Silverado 1500. Freaked all the passengers out of course and they stopped the truck and called around for help. The service stations mechanic came out and diagnosed the truck as having a bad battery and had heard of this happening before. Replaced the battery and I believe its been fine ever since. Sounded strange to me..maybe it has something to do with low voltage going to the electric power steering? ChevySilveradoLTZ
Thanks. I'll bring it to the dealership ASAP. My battery indicator says it's fine though. Hopefully it is nothing serious or costly.
Thomcat
Not normal and not good. Either have it repaired or have your friends move to a different neighborhood.
Sean Neilan
Do you have stock rims and tires? If you have bigger tires maybe it's hooking on to something?

A theoretical situation: What would be your opinion if this happened at 65MPH with your family in the truck? What you experienced can't happen someplace else? Are you sure?
