Noise in 4WD

Recommended Posts

2016 2500 Double cab 800 miles on the OD. Driving today in the snow I kicked the 4WD on and notice a noise that wasn't there before, Almost sounds like a u-joint on the drive shaft. I'm not sure how these trucks engage 4wd. I assume the front axle is always turning, The switch just engages the transfer case???

Anyway it only makes it in 4WD above 30MPH or so and only under load either accelerating or decelerating. It quiets down if you can keep load on the drive train neutral.

I doubt this is normal, been driving 4x4 for 20+ years the only time I heard a similar sound was on my lifted Jeep and that was caused by drive shaft angle.

Any ideas? Trip the dealer I assume??

Thanks

Well theirs a couple threads gone on about that noise, I had the same thought when I switched from my 1500 to 2500. Had mine checked out very thoroughly by my dealer. The drive train is just a bit stouter than a 1500 and it makes more noise in 4 hi. I got used to it and it works fine. I use mine weekly and dont pay any attention to it anymore. Go have it checked to make sure.

Mine is noisy in 4Hi also, more on deceleration than acceleration and quiets down when the drivetrain is unloaded with the throttle.

I asked the service manager the second or third day I had it if he thought it should be looked at. He told me what I described seemed normal but they would look it over if I wanted. I suggested I remind them at the first service to check it and he agreed that was best and that there was no danger of damage before then. The ice is gone now for a while so 4WD won't be used on the highway until things get slippery again.

Having it noted while it is in for service will put it on record as a concern so my butt and any future issues will be covered. The dealership where I bought it just down the street from me gives a lifetime powertrain warranty so knowing they have an interest in getting things fixed within the factory warranty period instills confidence.

I really like this truck! 2016 Silverado 2500HD LT 6.0L with Z71 and All Star Package.

Thanks, sounds like the same thing. I'll keep an eye/ear on it and definitely mention it when I bring it in for service.
