Better tire choice for stock

Recommended Posts

My Goodyear 275/55r20s aren't wearing the best....32k miles and showing pretty good wear. Its winter and rainy now and been having more traction issues so been thinking of new tires. I do want to lift the truck and do bigger tires, but that won't be for another two years when I'm done commuting with the truck ~80mi/day.

So that being said, I'd like to get a tire that will perform better than the Goodyears. Bonus would be if it got better fuel economy too, but not super important, just don't want to make economy worse. I don't mind a highway tire for now, but I do go camping and to the snow (nothing intense) a few times a year and have 4wd so as long as the tire choice wouldn't get me stuck.

Would the Toyo Open Country AT II be a good choice, or maybe the H/T?

I ran the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus on my 05 Sierra (same tire size) and it did good too.

Any other recommendations for a better tire?

Going to be hard to get any better gas mileage than the stock GY.

I've heard good things about the Michelin, I think it was or LTX A/T or something like that. It's a Highway type A/T, a lot like the GY, but good for all seasons, that should get you decent mileage still.

I have heard some pretty good things about the Firestone Destination. I know, Firestone right. They get good reviews from people who have them. Check out some of the online tire places most have customer reviews.

For what it's worth, my truck came (used) with Firestone Destination A/T mounted on it in the stock 275/55/20 size. I personally wasn't a fan of them aesthetically, but performance was good enough for me to keep them until they wore out, and the fact that I didn't see a reason to buy new tires if there was still tread on the current ones. I was still getting an average of 19-22mpg with them. Weight wise, I'm not sure what the stock Goodyears weigh, but the Firestones were ~45lbs per tire.

Michelin LTX M/S should be a tire to consider. These wear like iron and they lasted a good friend nearly 100K miles before he replaced with the same. These don't excel at any one thing but are decent performers in every respect. These are mainly a highway tire for sure. See reviews on Tire Rack. To answer your question the Toyo AT2 are a good tire and on a diesel truck they lasted a friend 52K miles and do well off road. No experience with the HT and a buddy got great mileage from the Alenzas on a 03 Suburban although again these are more of a highway tire.

When I replace the Goodyear's that came on my truck, I'm replacing them with the Michelin LTX M/S.

I think that is the tire I meant to reference.

Go to Costco and get Michelin Defender LTX MS. I've switched my past three trucks over to Michelin LTX MS's and always enjoyed a dramatic improvement in all areas over OEM. I like Costco because of their install and maintenance package as well as their tires are always recent production.

I second this the Defender is the Costco store version of the Michelin LTX M/S, I had them on my previous Tacoma. Michelin's run a bit more, but they are one of the few tires I've found that actually make it to their warranty mileage. They also make a more aggressive off road tread with the LT/ATX3. This go around I went with a set of Cooper Adventurer AT3 which is the Pep Boys store brand of the Cooper Discoverer. I paid $700 out the door for all 4 tires.

Defender LTX M/S replaced the LTX M/S all together. Its not a Costco version (perhaps at one point). https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Defender+LTX+M%2FS

Several guys I work with run nitto terra grapplers and love them. I haven't had any experience with them. I know one set is pushing 60k miles and still looking good. I've been running the new bfg ko2 in 275/60 for a little over 30k miles with no issues. They've performed well in rain/snow/mud. I commute ~60 miles a day highway. Hoping to squeeze 50k out of them, my buddy had the same tire and his were almost bald at 35k miles. Not sure what the difference is, maybe driving habits.

Another vote for the michelin. I have the ltx at2 and love it. Has just slightly more aggressive tread than highway tire but nothing as extreme as a real all terrain. Otherwise the ms is a great tire too. You get what you pay for!
