Cutting rocker panels

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have an 01 single cab. From the outside, the rockers look great. However, if I look in the holes with a camera, I can see rust forming on the inside. I was disappointed because I've been spraying oil in, but doesn't seem to have helped.

I am wondering, has anyone just cut their rockers off and left them off? I know it sounds stupid, but I wouldn't have to cut off that much because they aren't that rusty. I don't even think it would be noticeable unless you were looking at it on a lift.

If anyone has done this, post some pics

That's what I'll probably do, but at that point, the rust will have spread much more than now.

If I cut the bottoms off now, it won't be a whole lot of material missing. Also if it turns out right, it will basically eliminate the problem. If there's nothing there, there's no place for water and salt to sit

I know it's stupid haha.....just trying to think of cost effective options

Mine were surface rust when I bought the truck and by the next year they had holes in them. I'm not touching them now until atleast next year. I plan on moving farther south not too long after that.

Yeah I don't blame you. The north kills trucks, being that they're all steel and all "open." Salt splashes on every inch of them.

I'd like to keep my truck nice, it was kind of a garage find I guess you'd say. It was my grandpa's, he bought it new in 2001. He bought it after retirement so it was never daily driven and sat in a warm garage most every day and night. He was gonna trade it in at the dealership. They were gonna give him $1,500 and set it at the road with a $6,000-$7,000 price tag. I told him forget that, I'll give you $2000 for it. We both came out happy.

It still looks almost brand new, id like to keep it that way

Are you using new oil or used oil?
