Dexron VI transmission fluid after 32k miles

Recommended Posts

So I'm doing a partial flush on my transmission fluid on my 2014 6.2 with a 6l80.

I'm sucking it out of the dipstick tube. I got almost exactly 4.5 quarts out.

32k miles

Left side is fresh AC delco dextron vi (same fluid as factory)

Right side is what came out of my truck (which I thought was kinda pink when looking at the dipstick)

Wow!

This is what I used to pull it out, worked perfectly and was extremely easy. Just a few pumps and it creates a vacuum in the tank. 10 minutes later and a few pumps here and there to keep the vacuum and it started pulling air out.

One more caveat, I did have a stuck thermal bypass valve. My truck would see 220-230 degree transmission temps after driving in 45 minutes of city traffic. I would say all in all the truck spent 1% of its life at those temps since it took 45 minutes to get there, and its not often we drive in city type traffic for 45 minutes straght.

Thanks, how's it shifting?

I just drove it around the block after I did that, difficult to tell at this point.

To any onlookers looking to do this. The transmission holds around 12 quarts of transmission fluid. I only pulled out 4.5 quarts. I just emptied a gallon back into it.

My plan is to drive it around for a few days and let the fresh gallon circulate with the old stuff. Then do it again.

If it still looks really bad I'll do it a 3rd time.

FYI need to get the transmission up to 190 degrees for it to fully circulate, otherwise the thermostat wont allow flow to the tranny cooler.

It's easier to do a 4 quart flush then it is to change the engine oil. Was so easy

I was just going to ask that. Keep me posted as I was planning on doing the same.

The first time I pulled transmission fluid it looked as dark as yours. This was around 65,000 miles though. Took me 3 drain and fills before it turned nice and red. This is what I used: http://www.harborfreight.com/multi-use-transfer-pump-66418.htmlI had to buy some 3/8" vinyl hose as the hose that comes with the pump isn't rigid enough to push down the dipstick.

I wonder if that's because of the thermostat? I drain mine at 25k intervals and it looks the same as what I pour back in...but my trans rarely gets above 160, let alone 190.

Pretty much. The 6T front drive units look the same after 20-40k miles. They run hot as well (170-200 is considered operating temp). GM calls it normal for the fluid to discolor on those units.
