Magnaflow Quality?

Recommended Posts

I called a local muffler shop today and he said Magnaflows have an issue with the necks breaking so he only warranties his work directly around the muffler for 1 year because the neck will crack or break. Anyone else heard or experienced this breakage? I am looking at the 12909 (stainless steel) and the statement was directed at this model.

I am curious if he is just trying to up sale me as well? I have seen a lot of the members here using Magnaflows so I thought this would be a great place to see.. Thanks.

I have used them on last three rigs, love the sound.

never had a failure

Thank you... I pulled the trigger at another location and did it with the 12909...I like the sound and after checking the job it looks great. The sound is nice and clean and won't have my neighbors calling the HOA to require it be fixed.

12909 is what I have as well.

I did full 3.5" tail and 4.5" tip" no flapper no resonator

12909 is what I run on my 15 AT 6.2 with flapper deleted but kept stock tailpipe/resonator with no issues. Muffler has been on the truck for 18 months or so. Deeper tone and slight chopper sound at lower speeds in V4 mode but negligible drone at highway speeds.

I think it sounds perfect

have done long distance towing as well, no drone

The more I drive it with the magnaflow 12909 and no resonator and no flapper the happier I am with the change. For me perfect balance of sound and no longer have a prior. Why GM did not put something like this for stock or offer as as low cost option versus the $1300 Borla option I don't know. Either way I am a much happier person.

so why you go with the 22' vs the 18 that everyone talks about on here?.

1. I have a 6.2L with a 3.5" exhaust and it was one of very few exhaust in/out with 3.5" (no 18 " have it) I had them make sure the remainder of the exhaust was 3.5" to exit.

2. I have an AFE CAI that has added more sound to the system and was concerned if I put the 18" that I would be back to adding too much helicopter v4 drone and general noise. I did not want to have a 3rd round of muffler testing for this system. A little bit more of being conservative. Just in case.

Magnaflow holds up well in the pickups I have used them. My rides have to deal with rough gravel roads, a minimum of 4 miles of it, whenever they leave the house. And my pickups always have to do off road duty on the property. And I live in the rust belt. If there was going to be an issue, it would have shown up. I use the 12909 Magnaflow.

I had the 15318 system installed on my 14 with the 6.2 and sounded great for about a year and a half till something broke inside of the muffler and sounded like a marble inside a coffee can rattling around, sounded like complete crap. I called and emailed magnaflo about it and I never got a response from them about it. The only thing left to do was to warranty return it and replaced it with a Borla cat back system but the Borla has a more aggressive sound so I am not sure your HOA would approve of it. Just my experience though.
