1998 Silverado 5.7 Backfired, shut off, won't start now.

Recommended Posts

So my truck had a misfire that began about 2 months ago, I never got to checking it out other then pulling all the plugs but they were all fine, it ran fine but misfired at about 3000 rpms, then it slowly began to misfire and backfire all the time, until this week it backfired really hard, shut off, and now won't start. pulled the cap off and it was pretty corroded, replaced the cap and rotor, and it sounds like its trying a little harder to start but still won't. It cranks, almost starts(makes oil pressure), but then it bogs down and barely cranks and it back fires. it just continually repeats that.

distributor may be bad...

you got fuel, and all other things checked?

distributor bolted down?

by backfired, do you mean out the throttle or the exhaust?

either way..

I'd guess disty or timing chain or something.

I'd guess the same, sounds like the timing chain jumped a sprocket or two. If it's back firing it's almost a sure bet it's the timing chain. A fairly easy initial inspection would be to remove the rocker arm covers, loosen a few rocker arms and see if you have any bent or broken push rods before you actually tear into the timing chain cover. Depending on how far things got off from where they should be, bent push rods can result from a jumped timing chain unfortunately and will tell the story.

I have also been suffering majorly recently with starting Problems with my Truck and can only advise the following:

GET YOUR WRENCH OUT AND TIGHTEN THE TWO BOLTS ON THE STARTER MOTOR EVEN IF YOU BELIEVE THEY ARE ALREADY TIGHT TRUST ME THIS HAS SOLVED MY PROBLEM IN THE PAST !

1. Make sure your new Starter Motor is compatible with your Vehicle

2. Make sure your Battery is fully charged otherwise your Starter will not engage

3. Ensure your Battery is grounded

4. Using Jump Leads connect another Car to your Battery

5. Using Jump Leads connect the Negative of your Battery to the Body of your Vehicle

6. With the Starter Motor installed on your Car, using Jump Leads connect the Negative Battery Terminal to the small Bolt with the Negative Wire on the Starter Motor.

7. Double check every single Fuse that your Vehicle has.

8. Turn the key to Position II and see if you can hear the Fuel Pump

Like the other Person said that if you trace your steps back will you maybe get to the bottom of it.

If not then try reinstalling your old starter Motor.....hook up another Car to your Battery.....grab a Wooden stick or Hammer then wack the old starter Motor and if it then runs then you will have to get a better Starter Motor.

The connections may be different on the new Starter Motor or you may have mistakenly wired it up wrong.

I have recently bought a new Starter Motor but may be sending it back soon as it may not be Compatible.

It's definitely an electrical problem and I am sure it will get sorted.
