Including its $940 destination fee, the 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 will start at $40,995. GM-Trucks.com priced out a 2017 Toyota TRD Pro automatic (to make it comparable to the ZR2, which only comes in an automatic) and found the starting price to be $43,920. That is also the ending price of the TRD Pro, since there are no options or packages. At the time of this story's publication, Chevy had not yet put up the "Build" tool at the public website.

Our price comparison jives well with Chevy's claim that, "“ZR2 is truly a segment of one and does everything well — from traversing heavy two-track trails to high-speed desert running and full-on rock crawling. We’re thrilled to be able to offer it for more than $2,500 less than the next closest comparable vehicles."

An important thing to note about the ZR2's prices is that there will be many desirable options, starting with the 2.8L Turbo Diesel option, that Chevy typically charges about $3800 extra for. In addition to the Duramax engine option, Chevy lists the following as options:

-Choice of crew- or extended cab configurations (including short and long beds, respectively)
-7-speaker Bose premium audio system
-Dealer-installed, bed-mounted spare tire carrier
-Full-length black vinyl floor (no additional cost — standard interior features leather seats and carpet)

Our back of the napkin estimate is that a ZR2 with every option will top out at about $48K.

Chevy seems to have other competitors in mind for the ZR2. In its press release today Chevy Said, "Some vehicles that customers might cross-shop with ZR2 can spec out as much as $26,000 more than our truck — or the price of a well-equipped 2017 Colorado." If there is a midsized off-road truck that costs almost $70K we missed it. Chevy must mean the Raptor.

Without a doubt, the Colorado offers exceptional value by comparison to the TRD Pro Tacoma. Most of the technology Chevy includes is not even available on the Toyota. Here is a list of the Colorado ZR2's notable standard equipment:

On the lot locally. Not a fan of red, but a blue or white would be my choice.

I think they would have done well to have a covered off-road light package on a pushbar. It'd give it a much more aggressive look.
