2016 Sierra 2500 6.0 Gas would not start

Recommended Posts

I have a new Sierra 2500 DC 6.0 that wouldn't start last Saturday. All the instrument panels lights and radio come on.

There was no clicking sound like when you have a dead battery. I tried a jump box and that didn't work. The truck has 2,300 miles on it now, and I purchase it brand new this past November.

After contacting OnStar, they decided to send a tow truck out. Before I went back into the house I said to myself to try to start it one more time, and this time it started up. I then called OnStar to cancel the tow. I drove the truck that Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Monday morning I called the dealer to make a appointment to see what could have caused the no start. Dealer tells me to bring it in early Tuesday. Tuesday morning I go out to start it up, and now it doesn't start again. This time it had to be towed to the dealer.

The tow guy drops the truck at the dealer, one of the service guys comes out and try to start the truck and it starts.

So now I'm like what is going on ?

the dealer keeps the truck to try to find out the problem but they can't.

Today they told me every time they go to start it up it starts up fine.

Has anybody else had this problem before?

Thanks,

John

Dang it man that is frustrating. Almost has to be something like a neutral switch, next time it does this pull the shifter down out of park into neutral and see if it will start. The dealership will never fix it if they cannot duplicate the problem but maybe you can lead them in the right direction if this experiment works.

For all we know there could have been a slight accident with the car hauler bringing your new truck to the dealership!!

At least they didn't stick you with the tow bill. I had an 07 Sierra that had random no-start/no power at all issues, dealer could never duplicate, then the one time it did do it and I got a tow truck out, it stared right up at the dealership. They kept it for a day or so but could not duplicate and I got stuck with the tow bill with only 18,000 miles on it.

Need some more info. Did it turn over each time you tried? Was the turn over weak? Did it spit or sputter? What other kind of noises did it make?

Southpaw,

The starter does not engage, only the dash lights and the radio comes on when you turn the key on. The dealer still has the truck and yesterday it was very cold out and the truck didn't start for them.

The dealer now knows when it's cold out, the truck does not start. When the outside temp is warm, it starts up.

They said they know it's a electrical problem, but can't figure out what it is that's wrong.

I hope it wasn't in a accident on its way to the dealer, you know they would never tell the consumer it was.

Even the tow guy tried to start it before he hooked it up.

Now that the dealer duplicated the problem, not starting in cold temps they are searching for a electrical short where there might be a weak solder joint.

That is what they told me yesterday afternoon.

Had that happen with my wife's 2006 Caddy recently. 61,000 miles on the car. Cranked over, but would not start. Ran code reader and no codes. Same thing, tow guy tried to start it and couldn't. Took it to the dealer. Car started up for them. They couldn't figure out any problem. Brought car home and it has started find ever since. I claim there is a Ghost in the machine!

Cowpie with all the electronics in these new vehicles, sometimes it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack when a something electrical fails. I'm glad to hear that your caddy didn't give you anymore problems.

The dealer found out my Sierra won't start when it's cold out, when the temps are above 40 degrees it starts up fine. The starter does not even try to crank it over, only the dash lights and radio come on.

Friday I stop at the dealer and they had the truck up in the air on the lift. The mechanic was installing a electrical part which they said connects to the transmission. He said this electrical part was not getting any power through it when the temperature was cold out.

Now he did tell me the part name but I forgot, I will post the name when I get the truck back. The name should be on the service invoice.

I did see the part he was replacing and its about 12 to 14 inches long, and around 6 inches wide. It looked like a big electrical device as I could see the circuit boards on all 4 sides of it. Now I have work on a lot of cars and trucks in my 61 years, but I never saw a electrical car part like this.

I'm hoping the dealer gives me a call today or tomorrow to tell me my truck is fixed.

I will keep everyone updated when I hear from the dealership.

Lol on ghost machine, I'm thinking I have a fair weather machine. Only starts up when its warm outside!!!

If they give you they can not repeat it line. Take your truck back then record every start on your phone until it fails again.

Trust me once you have a video of the issue they can not pull the can not repeat thing anymore.

I had a 2010 Traverse that made noise in the steering wheel which turned out to be an issue on almost all of them.

Once I had a video of the issue though GM and the dealership worked on it. My 2010 ended up with larger power steering lines which eliminated the issue. These where basically hand made by GM engineers and installed by my dealer.

They found a cheaper way to fix all of the other ones running transmission fluid instead of power steering fluid. As it heats up and expands less. and the Current 2017 still use this.

My point is they will dig in the issue once you have hard evidence.

Don't count on that. They can and they will give the vehicle back to you if they cannot duplicate the issue, even if you have witnesses and video proof and yeah.

I got a call from the dealer a half hour ago. The new part is installed, but they want to keep the truck overnight to see if she starts up tomorrow morning when its cold outside.

I hope this is the right part to get my truck like a new GMC truck suppose to work.

I'm going to push for a extended warranty just to protect myself in the future, because at 2,300 miles on the vehicle I don't suppose to have problems like this.

Thanks guys for responding, I will report back with the name of the replacement part when I get the service invoice.

I picked up my truck today from the dealer, and they said it started up early this morning when it was 28 degrees outside.

They said it was Internal cold start failure in the Trans Control Module.

The TCM was replaced, so now I hope I don't have any more problems starting up when its cold outside.

I'm glad they found the problem, because I was starting think my truck was only a Fair Weather Truck. :nonod:

I had no idea that a electrical part inside the transmission would keep the truck from starting up.

You learn something new everyday about these new computer control vehicles.

Thanks for all the replies guys. :happysad:

Well after putting about 20 miles on my truck after the dealer service department said it was fix.

This morning it did not start, had to be towed again backed to the dealer. This is very frustrating to have a new truck with 2,300 miles that do not work.

The service manager told me to contact GM and to request a buy back. This truck has made me miss work the days it didn't start and I'm losing money.

  • 4 weeks later...

My truck has been at the dealer since Feb. 14th and they can't fix it.

Truck has 2,300 miles on it, and it will not start. After replacing different electrical parts and it seems that GM does not want to fix my truck or buy it back.

I bought a new truck and this has been a pain with nothing getting done.
