Hagerty, the folks that insure classic vehicles and maintains the largest classic car network in the world, says that three Chevy vehicles make the list of its picks of 2017 models that could become classic cars. The Camaro ZL1, Corvette Grand Sport, and GM-Trucks.com favorite, the Colorado ZR2 were all singled out by Hagerty as possible future collectible classics.

Hagerty says that, "The 2017 Camaro ZL1 has a stat sheet that would make last year's Corvette nervous, and comes to the table ready to race. The legend continues to inspire today just as it did 50 years ago, as the Camaro reaches a whole new audience with this instant collector's item." Commenting on the ZR2, Hagerty says, "The ZR2 comes with a suite of off-road tech including dynamic shocks, locking front/rear differentials, increased ride height and widened track. Its future collectability lives in the hands of Chevrolet's production volume planning staff." Of the Corvette Grand Sport, the group said, "...the Grand Sport has the technology to compete with the big boys while offering a striking visual reference to its ancestors: the 1963 and 1996 Grand Sports."

So which of the three do you think will be the bigger future collectible?

Honestly I don't feel like there will be any classic cars anymore. I don't foresee anything currently being sold turning into a classic car. But I guess people may have felt the same way back in the 70s too? I can't speak for that time period personally haha.

How about the Ford GTs and the Corvette ZR1s of a few years ago?

I'd go with grand sport.

it is the longest running random revival... goal being a collector's item.

the camaro is still a fast camaro, the truck has addons we put on in our backyards since the 60s.

I suppose you've got me there. I mean general vehicles as opposed to the special models. It's difficult for me to imagine people having an 2009 Silverado fully restored in their garage in ~2040 talking about how it is a beautiful and classically designed pickup.

I know that's not the topic of this thread, but so many people have base model firebirds and 1980s c/k1500s that are widely valued, and I don't believe these cars are special enough nowadays to be kept/refurbished long-term.

I don't think anything made today will be collectible, or at least a "collectors item". Not like past vehicles anyway. Nothing like a $7,000 Hemi car going for $350,000 for example. At least not any American made cars. There's probabley one off foreign cars that may be collectable.

  • 1 month later...

I'm betting the ZL1 will be worth more than the Vette in 10 years, maybe much less.

I was about to post that the Ford GT from the 2005-2006 era didn't go anywhere from their purchase price...I was wrong. They must have really taken off in the past few years.

Definitely not the trucks. I was part of a ZR2 page back when the S-trucks were new and aside from a few guys who've kept theirs clean, they've all been run into the ground by kids. The new one has some cool parts on it but I don't expect much more from it.

Anything that last that long. My first car was a 73 Mazda RX3 my second of a long list was a stripper 74 barracuda 318 2 barrel 3 speed. My first truck was a 70 ford 240 six three on a tree. Even a 55 Chevy 4 door 6 cylinder I had. I wasn't all that impressed with those then but love to have them now.
