need some feedback on 2015-17 suburban, tahoe and yukon denali

Recommended Posts

My first post and need some honest opinions and directions from some of you guys/gals.

I'm in the market looking at a 2015-17 suburban ltz, denali xl or tahoe (in that order). I had a 07 suburban ltz with and it ran like a champ until I started having issues with the stabilitrak and other various lights coming on ramdomly causing the truck to go into "limp" mode. My wife and I traded that in and got her a 2011 Acura Mdx nice but way too small. Being that she finally got her license a year ago she's keeping the mdx and I'm looking for a truck for me.

while spending hours browsing the internet I've found issues with the 2015 and up GM trucks involving buffeting or buffering. is this something that happens over time or do most vehicles have this issues upon leaving the dealer? Has there been any repair that works and if buying a newer GM truck what should I look/listen for? Lastly is the magnetic suspension just another way of ripping off the consumer with $2000 repair bills like the crappy air ride system in my old 07 suburban ltz?

Please pardon all the questions and any and all insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm a 6'6 and 260 pounds basketball player and need the extra space of an extra large suv. thanks in advance

My son has a 15, he has boom sound driving down the road. It sometimes goes into limp mode and then will start right back up. Dealer can find no issues. He bought it used, I wonder why it was traded in so soon.???

There's a lot of young people going around with that "boom" sound all the time. Been wondering if a cattle prod against the sheet metal might have an effect on audio quality, especially when left running at the pumps.

Just a thought.

Some people are more sensitive to the issues than others - I am - I have heard it in every single one I have been in even the ones that my neighbors think are flawless on 18s, etc

There are 3 things - booming, buffeting and vibration

All boom and buffet while some vibrate, too

Test drive a lot of them to find the ones that boom and buffet the least

If it vibrates, don't even consider it

basketballnyc - with hundred thousands of these trucks sold, all the ones that he's driven to include his may boom and buffet. But saying "all" can't be quantified by the comparative few posts on this forum from different owners. Mine didn't do it from day one and I am over three years in my truck. The trucks are real nice if you can find one that does not have any issues. From what I've read, the issues in the post are valid, folks making complaints are not making this up. You'll regret the headaches, frustration, and denial from GM if you happen to get a truck that missed the mark.

We just traded in a 2010 Yukon XL (SLT) 4x4 for a new Denali Yukon XL also a 4x4. We really liked the 2010, but we did have a number of issues. Every one of the exterior door handles broke (supposedly fixed with the new body style), both mirrors quit power adjusting and folding, we had a transmission leak (torn gasket), mirror LED turn signals quit working, like that. It was a great vehicle though, despite all that, so we bought the new Denali.

We don't seem to have roof/booming issue others experienced, but we do have something going on with the electronics. So, for instance, none of out Apple iPods will work with the sound system. They start off working and within a short time, just fail, like they are no longer attached. The iPhones seem to work fine, though. The front proximity sensor seems to be working, but won't beep. The driver's memory seat seems to have a mind of its own, and chooses random distances and heights, but if I press and hold the actual seat memory button (low on the door), it will assume the correct position. The garage door opener will not program and it is useless so far. All this on a $80,000 SUV with about 300 miles on the clock. I'm hoping the dealer can reflash the memory or something and fix all this, which hopefully is really the same issue and not a bunch of different things screwed up.

I've had nothing but compliments since I bought the new one, and the ride seems just fine so far. There is some hesitation in the 8 speed auto (maybe searching is better. It's trying to find the correct gear, I think) at low speeds when accelerating, but I read about this somewhere in a car magazine, which suggested that will smooth out as soon as the tranny learns my driving pattern.

All this electronic whiz-bang stuff comes at a price and decreased reliability, but I am hopeful it's nothing more than a minor glitch in our case. I did look at a new Ford Expedition (Platinum 4x4) but liked the Yukon so much, we sprung for the extra $$$. Before the first Yukon, I had 3 GM pick-ups, so we're pretty happy overall with GM products.

JCC,

Did you have both key remote fobs in the vehicle at the same time for issues regarding your power seat settings? One should be configured as remote 1 and the other as remote 2. With the setting enabled in the menus, the seat should adjust automatically when you get in the vehicle as you start the engine. Maybe it's getting confused if both key fobs are in the vehicle at the same time?

For the garage door opener, my unit had rolling codes, and I actually had to place my existing old remote transmitter against my Suburban to program it, even though one would think that you wouldn't need it to program. You may want to try that if you haven't already.

Do you have the seat set for vibrate for the sensor alerts? Maybe if you toggle from beep to vibrate then back to beep again in the settings menu, it might remedy the issue?

What version of iOS do you have in your iPod? Maybe Carplay is trying to interface with the Yukon, or if it's not the right version of iOS, it wil have problems with it?

So far so good with our '17 Suburban Premier, with about 1300 miles so far. Build date was late 12/2016. No booming, buffetting or vibration issues so far. Stock 20" Premier wheels. My heated seats get too hot for me on the highest setting, but that could just be me.

Just today I figured out the memory seat. My fob was actually #2, not #1, although the dealer had it mismarked. I was setting the #1 memory in the vehicle which explains why fob #2 won't work. (duh)

The audible front proximity warning is apparently set to go off only when the distance is 6 inches or less, and I have not crossed that threshhold yet. Tomorrow, I'll test it. The seat and warning screen are both working, just not the beeper.

I had the same issue with the rolling codes not programing in my 2010, and I can't remember what the work-around was. I'll figure it out. It's supposed to learn from the remote controller we have already set, but it won't do so.

And for the iPods, they are up-to-date, but there may be some conflict with the music formats. But the iPhone works fine, both cabled and bluetooth, so no real loss I guess if I can't use the iPods. I'll mess with them when I have time. They originally show up under "media" and play fine, but after an hour or so, they start randomly stopping and have to be restarted. Eventually, the Yukon won't even recognize them. We tried changing the cable, using different iPods, changing the iPod settings, etc. Same issue. There may be something on the GMC web page about it.

The Yukon we bought is a 2016, built 6/16, although brand new (now 500 miles on the clock). We bought this one rather than a '17 because it's very dark metallic green, a non-standard color. A few dealers in Florida got them. No one seems to know why, so I assume it was a GM marketing test, to see if they sold. I have only seen three, all Denali's and all on dealer lots, and there's nothing in the GMC web site that has the green. I think it's actually a Buick color, new last year. Anyway, it's cool looking, almost black when not in sunlight.

Oh, the heated seats...the first thing my wife said was "The seat won't get hot." She is used to the 2010 setas which could get uncomfortable, they were so warm on the high setting. She has a bad back and uses the seat heat even in the summertime in Florida. But reading about it here, I guess GM did crank the max temp down a little. I have only used them myself when I was somewhere below freezing, so not something I would have noticed.

On mine, when the remote key fob changes, it alerts on the instrument panel screen of the new driver. That's how I was able to initially tell which one was Remote1, and Remote2. I don't believe the beep and the vibration work both at the some time. I think it's just one or the other, at least that's what the menu setting shows.

I have an old iPod, final generation before they discontinued it, that I can test out and see if I have the same issues as you.

Do you have pictures of the color? That would be great to see.

Yes, on my old vehicle, I spent the longest time trying to figure out why my Homelink wasn't learning my garage door opener. I called up tech support and they told me that I actually had to take my original remote and place it up against the homelink, even though it was a rolling code set up and I had pressed "LEARN" on my garage door opener unit. I guess physically holding the remote to the Homelink makes the unit figure out what type of physical controller you have so it can configure it? Who knows. After I did that it learned the codes just fine.

the '16's have a longer On Star trial package. I believe they scaled back the trial period on the '17's. I guess they were losing too much money on the trial being too long.

Re: Home Link, thanks. I'll try that again. The instructions in the owner's manual seem to suggest when you piush and hold the button, the lights will stay on until they starting flashing which means it's done. Mine just go on and off for a second even when holding the buttin down continuously.

I didn't notice anything on the dash about changing drivers but I'm still learning the new systems, which are very different from the 2010. The seat is now working fine, so that was operator error.

I have the proximity warning set for audible, and got the front to work yesterday, but it only sounds at 6" or less...pretty close. The dash display was flashing well before that though.

Photos don't really show the color very well, but in the sun, you can see the metal flake. The rear shot is actually from one at another dealer in Jacksonville. As you walk around it, it shifts from black to dark green as the light changes. It looks nice in person.

2016 Yukon XL SLT with 18" wheels and tow package. Zero buffeting, booming, or vibration. I may just be lucky, but IMO those big "bling" wheels must have something to do with those issues.

Caveat: when the truck goes into v4 mode you can definitely feel it. Reminds me of hitting the gas in a 5 speed when you're in too high a gear. Doesn't bother me, though. My brother-in-law's Silverado does the same thing.

Nice color!

On my '17 Suburban, I can't feel any difference at all when it goes from V8 to V4 or vice versa. I wonder if they changed something between '16 and '17?
