Disabling auto headlights

Recommended Posts

I have a 2003 2500 regular cab. It is a pretty basic model. I have been reading the owner's manual online and it says on the headlight dial you can select off and the lights will stay off. Well, I have that function on my dial, but it is default to the auto setting- meaning that everytime I start my truck the lights are on. To defeat this I have to turn the dial CCW and it is fine for that trip. The thing is, that I just thought aout' is that mine has an 'internal spring' that makes the dial rest at auto. The way they explain it in the owners book implies there is no tension, so you can place it anywhere you like.

If I could remove my dash panel and get to the headlight switch box- do you know of any instructions to where I could remove the 'spring'- therefore letting ME decide when I do and do not want my lights to come on?

FYI, my truck has been messed with. When I got it two years ago- the radio only comes on in the second key position, not the first as it should. My roof marker lights are setup on a toggle below the dash. The aftermarket cd player was fed into a IGN 10A fuse and the installers said my wiring had been hacked. Also, my daytime running lights do not ever come on and I do not want them to. The previous owner had Eagle Eye brand new headlight lenses on the truck when I got it. So, I just saying it is not stock or untouched

Thanks. Everytime I start the truck- they come on. I can then turn the dial ccw and they will go off, the bottom light will then illuminate, and the dial will return to the parking lot position

There are four positions: off, auto, parking lights, and headlights. I asked the dealership to disale the auto feature but they said they couldn't (probably for legality).

I will search, I just didnt want to tear into it and risk damage and waste my time when there could be nothing done anyway.

Never mind it probably will not work. I just turned the dial and held it off while turning the key to run. The lights came on. I can turn the key and the lights come on, then I turn the dial ccw and they go off. I can turn the dil ccw again and they come back on or I can turn the dial cw once for parking lamps or twice for headlights.

It was worth a try.

GM is a real pain about the headlights being on. We've had trucks from '99 to '13 and they're all like that. The headlights are on all the time. Unfortunately without a custom wiring job I doubt you could turn them off with the truck in gear.

Dealer initially told me they could disable on my 2015 via a flash. Then they told me GM would not allow them to unless I was LEO.

I removed the spring inside the switch. Switch stays in the off position. Auto headlights and DRL disabled, as they should have been from factory.

After messing around in my 02 last night I found out if you hit the dome override button 4 times you hear a ding then have control over the headlights using the switch. You can turn them off even in gear.

Can someone explain. The second you pull your truck in gear the low beams turn off and DRL kick in. What is actually your problem. During the day low beams are on at a reduced voltage.

That dome light switch truck works on the older trucks but does not work in the newer ones that have the auto feature
