Fuel Tank Upgrade

Picked up new Sierra SLT, 6.2 lt, max Tow package with 6.6' box. Filled her up for the first time today and to my surprise she only took 75Lt / 20 gal from empty!!!!. I had asked for a large tank option early in the discussions only to be told it was not an option.... but I expected a 98 lt (26 gal) s per my 2007 and other newer GM's I had been in.

Why would GM think a 75 lt tank would work for true truck buyers/users! Especially with a 6.2 lt and 6.6' box. I'm a extremely disappointed. Does anyone know if there are larger aftermarket gas tanks for these trucks available or if there is even room to put a larger tank by chance. Had I known I'm not convinced I would have purchased although I am a GM guy at heart! I'm in the Toronto Ontario area.

Ford can put a 120 or 135lt tank... why can't GM!

It's 26 gallons, the gas gauge will show empty fairly early. 8ft bed has the larger tank. Unfortunately GM doesn't offer a tank upgrade like ford does.

Wouldn't you just be carrying more weight around with a larger tank? With the increased fuel economy of these newer engines, you would probably need to stop on a long trip to stretch or use the bathroom anyway.

It's not 26 gallons. Look it up. Even on the GM website they do not advertise it - cause they know some guys won't touch'm! It's 20. You own one? What year/model/ box? Dealership confirmed. That's why I'm looking to see if anyone knows of any aftermarket tanks for 1500. They have some for 2500 and 3500 I've seen but not 1500. As for carrying weigt - it's a truck. If I was worried about that I wouldn't have bought a truck.

My 2016 double cab 6.6 bed is 26 gallons. Says so on the spec sheet, and I have put 25+ gallons in when running on empty

I have a 14 CC. According to the gas pumps around here, I have put in as much as 24-25 gallons at a time. And with my typical driving habits average about 450-500 miles per tank. Im not saying I wouldn't like to have a 30 gallon tank or more, but the "26" is plenty for needs. My last truck was a heavily modified Nissan Frontier. It only had a 21 gal tank, which would barely get 300 miles from a tank (under powered 4.0 v6). So I'm very happy w the range of the Silverado!

26 gallon tank under your truck... drive the truck till your low fuel light comes on.. drive to the pump and watch the gallons.. should put 23-25 gallons in..

I agree with the OP, I came from a 2012 f150 with a 135L tank (Canada) and now have 95L tank on my 2017 GMC Sierra. Is it a deal breaker, hell no ! It's probably my only complaints with the new truck. I did grow to love the big tank but I'll learn to live without for the other benefits that GM has over Ford.

I've also put more than 20 gallons in mine. 2015 CCSB. The manual also agrees.

There is the 34 gal tank, that comes on the reg cab, 8 foot box truck, 1500 model.

The question is; and no body has ever been able to answer this, is will it fit under the crew cab truck, with long or short box???

OP.... You should be the one to try it out, and let us Know ?

Its will not fit. Tank will mount in the same location but the tank will hit the rear end.. maybe a crew cab long bed

My gauge was just on the low side of the 1/4 line (actually touching it) when I filled it up.....took 19.? gal....almost 20.

Same as my 2006 Sierra was.....26gal

Wow. This is nuts. Mine's a 2017. Pulled the manual and it states 26 gal - 98lt. I'm gonna drive this thing to near dry again and film the whole filling process. Swear it only takes 75 -77 lt from empty. Hope I'm wrong but only filled it once. I'll post. FYI - my manual also states 98lt tank. Hope they didn't install the wrong tank! Fixable but a pain in the ass!

It normally takes 22 gallons to fill mine up. I guess they gave us a large cushion in case you have a brain fart or something.

Low fuel light usually comes on for me around 21 gallons
