Coil failure

Jarodlorenson

Question

I am repeatedly having to replace my #2 coil every couple months. I have tried different brands and replaced the plug and wire. The truck is a 2004 Silverado 5.3. What are some other causes for that specific coil to fail over and over?

Lean fuel mixtures (every engine today ...), heat, high compression, high secondary resistance (a half-broken conductor in the short wire section) and large plug gaps, are all coil killers. Today's engines are super tough on them.

That said, the aftermarket is LOADED with junk today. Brand is important. If you can return the coil, keep doing it until you get one that works, or change brands.
