Depends on the job. For basic maintenance, your standard Craftsman 3xx piece tool kit would cover a lot. Most of the fasteners are metric. An electric impact helps with wheels and big bolts/nuts. And then for diagnostics, a scanner that can read engine codes, Abs, and srs

..and jack.

the factory one is terrible.

3 ton minimum (just for the front), hydraulic makes it easier. I do not know why they act so heavy up front.

I bent my 2 ton on a 1996 half ton.

For giggles, as my dad is a trucker, big tools in the garage, I put his monster hydraulic jack in the middle of one side of the truck and it picked up the whole thing like it was nothing. Front and rear tires off the ground on one side. I think that was an odd number like 6.5 ton

Strong tools is like a deep breath.

What tools do you already have? What sort of experience do you already have?

If you don't have much for either chances are that you will only be able to use the basic ones that come in kits. Which covers most maintenance and repairs anyways.

You'll end up getting told as you need them. I mean, how often will you need a trim removal tool? Probably never. Until you do. No point in spending the money until you need it.

A basic tool kit; wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers... That'll probably cover 85% of everything on the truck.
