Box Wheel Well Liner Question

Swapping the back up lights today & came across this:

 

 

This is after almost 3 months of service & about 2,000 miles (the LH side was the same). I seem to recall the GMT900s having a 'ribbed' plastic part between the wheel well & the rear of the box side (I could be wrong though). If this part was present, was it to prevent road spray from spreading?

 

My brother has a '16 Sierra HD w/ the liners. The nephew is going to pull 1 of the taillights & see what kind of mess is behind it.

 

If the liner doesn't make a difference, I'll just make a point of pulling the tail lights in the spring & cleaning the sand & salt off.

 

In the past I was well aware of making sure to wash the upper portion of the wheel opening where the 'wheel house' stamping & outer panel are spot welded together.

IIRC - the 25HD's with the Snow Plow option includes the wheel well liners - though (dealer installed)

That's the first I've heard of that content for the VYU option.

I will be removing the tail lights to check this as well. I have the liners and hope that they help with the salt and dirt up there. May need to be looking into some extensions behind the tires.

On my 2011 25HD the rear wheel liners covered the entire rear frame behind the tires, the 2015 only cover about 1/2 the frame ...

Not sure of the mat'l, but some trim levels (depending on whether it's a GMC or Chev) have a moulded 'liner' that is installed in the rear wheel openings.

Looking today and there are already 4 holes pierced in the 'inner' stamping.

I'm thinking once the warmer weather arrives, I might do some do some 'cardboard assisted design' & make up some mud guards like I did on my Ranger:

These mudguards were made from truck mudflap mat'l.

 

Another note, is the 'slop' is just the crap off the highways up here from salting & sanding operations, no mudding involved.

I finally had time to look in the tail light openings, wasn't all that bad just sand. 4500kms. I found little spots on both sides sides of what seemed like paint wear off. I washed out the voids and sprayed Rust Check on the spots before putting the tail lights back on.

I found genuine GM wheel well liners for my 2016 GMC 2500HD. Shipping isnt cheap, so I called my dealer. I can buy them for about $120 for the pair. These are the "carpeted" style just like the front wheel wells. No hardware is included. The truck is already pre-drilled for the attaching parts. You can find those on ebay if you do some digging. You will need some square nuts that fit into the truck and then bolts to thread into those nuts. Gm wants alot for the hardware...I think there are about 16 attaching points on each side of the vehicle. I believe they want $5 for each piece. I found all of the hardware for around $30 on ebay or amazon.

i have the carpeted liners in mine i just pulled my tail lights to put led bulbs in and there was all kinds of sand and mud in mine i have about 2600 miles on it so far
