Short Trips on horrible roads

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

just wondering if anybody else drives pretty short trips on horrible roads? I try to dodge potholes and get the truck up to temp but i'm not sure if i should be doing more? I've had it a year and it just passed 2k on the odo

Reading between the lines, getting up to temp? Drive it until it reaches temp then 10 minutes or so then the heat will dissipate the condensation out of the engine and muffler system.

There is not much you can do to help if you're running short trips on bad roads besides driving something you don't care about. I would re evaluate why I only have 2k after a year and do I really need a truck?

Guess it depends on what one's vision of a "horrible road" looks like. I drive 2 miles of gravel roads, each way, just to get to and from the nearest highway from my house. During spring thaws, major thunderstorms, etc I think they are horrible. And the county maintenance has gone downhill over the years.

And rough roads have no bearing on warm up. It is engine on time. But to that end, my pickup is usually up on engine temp by the time I get to the nearest highway. I suppose if one's short trip is a few city blocks, nothing is going to get the engine and oil up to full operating temp.

Low mileage and not getting up to temp very often is one of the situations where oil change should be yearly, instead of by OLM.

I would change oil more frequently than yearly, the oil would get contaminated with condensation and become corrosive. I would probably go at twice a year at 2000 miles. Or run it to full operating temperature regularly.

Goodness, I've had my truck for just under 2 months, 4900 miles.

There is good info being passed on above, with those few of miles, and not any real heat generated by such short trips, oil changes should be done way before milage comes up, might be 4 years until you reach that. The oil doesn't get to burn off all the garbage it collects from condensation in the block.

If you have the gas engine you should be okay. But driving a duramax for that short of a duration is not doing it any good. It definitely needs to get out and run at a higher temp. You run the risk of ruining your engine because the DEF system cannot burn off the carbon out of the exhaust system. Diesels like to run flat out. They will overheat if you baby it. One of my hubby's buddies ruin his diesel engine by babying it.

sorry for the short cryptic post, i'm saying i take short trips on really unkept roads(potholes, splits ETC) and i'm just wondering if anybody else is dealing with this alot, and how they deal with it. Second was the temp thing, i drive about 3 miles to from and work, i allow a full warm up prior to driving, and wondering if thats good enough until the once a week or so i have time to go on the highway?

There is many instances of equipment around the country that is used intermittently, and for short periods that only get annual oil changes and they do just fine. I would not take it for more than that for some of the reasons mentioned. High quality motor oils have sound enough add packs to take care of things for a year.

If you're getting it out for a run once in a while it will be fine. Long idling at startup probably hurts more than it helps.
