Just in time for a huge March Nor'Easter, we're getting our first opportunity to drive the heavily updated 2017 Silverado HD on our home turf. For the next few days, we're parking this Silverado in the GM-Trucks.com Garage. Since this 2500HD is also packing the "increased strength" 6.6L Duramax Diesel Engine with 910 lb-ft of torque, we're already lining up things to tow and haul around.

From now until Friday we're going to share our week with you as temporary owners of the most powerful consumer HD truck on the market today.

Our example HD is equipped as follows

2017-03-13 11.01.07.jpg

2017 Silverado 2500 HD LT Double Cab 4WD

Be a part of this review!

What do you want to know? What do you want us to take a photo of? What would you like covered if we give a video walkaround?

Stay tuned for more updates to this thread later today and as the week goes on!

The gooseneck & fif wheel prep is $370 factory installed. The "intellihaul by echo master" four camera system is not factory installed. The dealer can get anywhere from $800 to $1500 to install this on your truck. Unfortunately, it does not integrate with the factory supplied tailgate camera. Nice truck otherwise though.

Yes, it seems like it's not included on the price sheet that I have. I'll clarify with GM before my full write up. Thanks for the help.

I do really like the 5-camera system. The side mirror cams are extremely useful even in normal everyday driving!

I took the HD out in heavy snow this morning and as predicted, it dealt with the conditions great.

I did notice two things related to the Duramax.

1) The torque is so immense at low RPM that the tires just want to break free, even in 4x4, in snowy/slick conditions. Stabilitrak keeps this in check.

2) If you really get on it, you can feel the torque of the Duramax attempt to rotate the entire vehicle counterclockwise as it breaks free in slick conditions. The feeling underscores how powerful this new engine really is.

Overall, one of the best engine/transmission combinations I've ever driven. Barely louder than a gas engine and carries a precise mechanical sound that really satisfies the eardrums.

Also, this generation "extended" / double cab is a PITA to get a full-size car seat in. Our 2011 Sierra with the swing-apart extended cab doors is super easy and has a lot of room to maneuver. This 2017 is a step back on child-seat ease of use. The front passenger seat had to be fully moved forward and non-usable to accommodate the child-seat. If you have kids, it would be worth it to upgrade to the crew cab.

Please post your mileage once you get a few miles on her

Currently running at 15.3MPG, BUT that's after hauling a ton of wood pellets for a friend yesterday and driving in four-wheel-drive today in the snow. I'll try a highway run in a few days when the roads are clear.

The pellets dipped the back-end slightly but the Duramax could barely tell they were there.

Josh and I just returned from a trip out in the worst of the Nor'Easter. We've got over 10-inches so far but the Silverado could not care less. Total confidence.

I agree with the PITA comment about extended cabs in general with car seats. I am really looking forward to a new crew cab truck later this year for that very reason.

It looks like you only have one car seat in there though, which if that's the case, I think they typically recommend to put it in the middle if you can. That's what I did when we only had one, and it wasn't too bad for where the seats had to be positioned in the front to make it work. I didn't have to contend with the small front hinged door either though.

Still prefer the looks of the extended cab vs double cab. Reading all these reviews it's a good thing the closest dealer to me rarely has any duallies and if they do it's a denali and I refuse to pay for all that extra stuff. Plus I have enough fun spinning the tires with my LMM, I'd hate to see what I'd do with the new Duramax.
