Where do you keep you gun while driving?

Recommended Posts

Where does everybody keep their guns while driving? I saw a post not long ago where somebody had bought one of those magnets and attached it to the forward facing portion of the front center seat. I just purchased this magnet myself but I am not sure where I want to put it yet. My biggest concern is being involved in an accident and have a loaded weapon flying about. I keep it in my door in my 07 and got rear ended and when I looked down it was pointed right up at me and I didn't like that at all. I also thought about getting one of those steering column holster setups but I am not sure if I like those either. Anybody have any good spots. I keep it on my right now but in the event I needed it while I was in the vehicle I would have a hard time drawing it out quickly and there has been a large increase in car jackings in my area in the last year so I would like to have it readily accessible.

Maybe keep your door locked?

I have bucket seats. There are two pockets inside my console. Fore and aft. The fore console is skinny, I keep pens, small notepad, work ID, etc., in it. The aft console has two compartments, is removable.

I have a leather holster with a clip for IWB carry on one side and a belt loop on the other. The clip fits nicely on the fore storage pocket. My G23 sits up in easy reach, though I do have to raise the console lid.

If I get out at a sketchy gas station, I remove the gun and lay it on the driver seat and leave my door open.

That doesn't matter much if they have a gun. Somebody was shot and killed just yesterday not 10 miles away resisting a car jacking.

Yeah, I could see that, much like I could see pulling a gun would get someone shot in that same situation.

Here's the deal. I am a bigger guy and its not also comfortable to me to wear my gun while I am in my truck. I have done it and will continue to do it but if I am going to be in my truck for a long period of time I like to take it out and have it at the ready if I need it. Is it not better to take it out and have it ready so I am comfortable as opposed to not having it with me at all? This is very similar to the "whats the best caliber to carry / whats the best pistol for EDC" argument. I do my absolute best to hide the fact that I am carrying. I reholster before I open the doors and I dont play/readjust it in pubic.

I carry one on me at all times in an IWB holster and I never take it out. It stays on my side when driving. This way I don't have to holster/un-holster every time I enter/exit my vehicle. I also keep a second pistol in the center console. The key is do what you feel comfortable doing. My opinion of the matter is that I have practiced drawing from my IWB holster while sitting in the truck enough that I am comfortable doing it. I also feel that if you are in a situation where you don't have enough time to draw your gun from your person then you are not paying enough attention to your surroundings. Again, not trying to offend anyone, just my personal opinion. I wear my IWB holster at anywhere from the 3-4 o'clock position. I have found that it conceals easier for me and it is quicker to draw from than further towards my back. Appendix carry is going to offer the fastest draw but I just have not been able to get comfortable carrying from that position.

What type of CCW do you carry? Maybe a smaller frame? I used to carry a glock 19 and have since switched to a glock 43. Still a 9mm and much easier and much more comfortable to carry. I just don't have 15+1 rounds in the gun, but if I can't get the job done in 7+1 (I have the one round magazine extensions) then I'm probably screwed anyway. Again, another one of my opinions on the topic so not trying to offend anyone.
