5.3 Break in??

Well I'm supposed to get my new truck on the 27th. My plan was to go upstate on the 8th. The ride is like 5 hrs and now I'm concerned I won't have enough time for the break in period I have been reading about. I'll try to drive around town as much as I can before I go on the interstate. I just hope the 27th is correct for delivery.Any ideas?

Caution: The vehicle does not need an elaborate break-in. But it will perform better in the long run if you follow these guidelines:

  • Keep the vehicle speed at 88 km/h (55 mph) or less for the first 805 km (500 mi).
  • Do not drive at any one constant speed, fast or slow, for the first 805 km (500 mi). Do not make full-throttle starts. Avoid downshifting to brake or slow the vehicle.
  • Avoid making hard stops for the first 322 km (200 mi) or so. During this time the new brake linings are not yet broken in. Hard stops with new linings can mean premature wear and earlier replacement. Follow this breaking-in guideline every time you get new brake linings.
  • Do not tow a trailer during break-in. See Trailer Towing for the trailer towing capabilities of the vehicle and more information.
Following break-in, engine speed and load can be gradually increased.

I'm 61, every new truck or car I've bought ( a lot ) I drive like I would normally ( hard) never a problem. Even one ton duallys, gas or diesel. Pick up at the dealer add 5th wheel hook up and go, petal to the metal. Some of my performance cars back in the day, drove them like I stole them on the test drive, buy them drive them hard from then on. If their going to break better under warranty.

Yes I read that. I don't know if I could get to 500 miles before the trip.

 

 

You will be fine. The 500 miles bit and the speed varying is mainly for the axles and maybe the transfer case. If you don't have enough by your trip I think you will be fine. I wouldn't sweat it too much. I was doing 65mph like 300 miles in on my ne Colorado. No noises or abnormalities. Before that I was being good, keeping it at 55 or less, but again, no strange noises or anything. As for the engine, Just keep out of WOT and say under 4000rpm for the first few hundred. That trip will probably be a better break in for everything.

That's exactally how I drove mine during the first 500mi and It runs like a scalded cat with absolutely zero issues, so just don't pvssy foot it around. Do some heavy accelerating and let it coast to unload the rings and do this manually in 3-4 gear and it will be fine. Change the oil when you get back from your trip.

Left the dealership sideways...break it in like you're going to drive it.

That would be my thought process....definitely going to go up and down the RPM'S and speed being a little hard on it. Too bad mine had 300+ miles on it when I took ownership? I just hope some kid had it and punched it to the floor...I can't do anything for it after 300?
