E-core filters

Recommended Posts

I'm hearing all kinds of things about how bad ac delco e-core oil filters are. I have been using them for several years now without any issues, and the gm dealers seem to have faith in them. So I figured I'd ask, who continuesaid to use them, and are they good, bad, or middle of the road filters

I believe there were some early failures of the E-cores when they were first rolled out that has people worried.

My friend has 100k on his 2014 High Country all on E-core. No issues.

I have used them in the past without issues, but I use several filter types (K&N / Wix / AC Delco).

I think the current filter on my truck is a Non E-Core Delco filter (found a couple of them on the clearance shelf at Wal-Mart about 6 months ago)

I have one ready to go on (PF46E). My last two oil changes were with the older, non-ecore. GM seems to do their homework and hand it in on time and completed. So I wouldn't worry too much. They might not win any battles or contests on paper and in lab tests but what does that really mean anyhow. To me, it appears to be a well rounded filter or as you asked, middle of the road. But then, what is good better and best??? Best usually you would refer to as heavy duty or racing. So, if you aren't hammering on it at a tractor pull or pulling mobile homes up Pikes Peak then why waste resources on it? What you have here is the 'best' filter for our trucks. Why? Because it works. It filters decent. Seems to flow better than most. And it one of the first attempts I have heard of to be loving to Mother Earth.

I had gotten a stock pile of the non e-core filters last year and just about out of them. I have ran a few e-cores with no issues.

One would have to remember that GM redesigned their filter to go with their current engine line-up. I feel they are an average filter for the 5 to 8k oil changes but wouldn't take them past that.

When we had our 2011 Acadia I was doing 5k oil changes because the UOA's showed that the oil was at the end of it's useful life so I never went past 5k. But now that I have the Burb I will be running the AMSOIL Ea017 filter on it once the free oil changes from the dealership are done.

Even though GM doesn't make the filters? I never really sought out the AC Delco oil filters. It has always been so much easier to get a quality Wix/Napa filter or one of the other top brands. Not like anyone is crawling around under my pickup and would notice. Heck, the tires aren't AC Delco tires, nor is a lot of the stuff on a pickup. Most of the stuff is made by someone else than GM. So having a non GM filter as opposed to a GM labeled one never really crossed my mind.

Hot button topic. I guess some think that since the center support of the E-core filter is some sort of composite-nylon material, it isn't as good as the old style AC Delco filter that used a perforated metal center support. Well, I would think oil flows through the E-core filter's support better, and the E-core is supposed to have a more efficient filter media and a better sealing bypass valve. I have not seen any issues with the E-core filters, and I figure if they are good enough for GM's engineers, they are good enough for me.

If the e-core is such a great idea, have any other filter manufacturers copied it? Nowadays in any industry, there's a lot of monkey see, monkey do. I prefer to use AC filters, non e-core, but my second choice since the late 2000s has been WIX.

Lots of filters are e-core, and I don't believe Delco invented it...wasn't the E-tech filter sold by Walmart an e-core for a long time? I think that's where I first heard of it.

Its also been on the market for at least five to ten years that I remember, if it was a major problem; it should have shown it by now.

There are likely some patents associated with the E-core design. It is my understanding that this is the company responsible for the design and manufacture of E-core filters:

http://www.champlabs.com/

Notice they also make Luberfiner oil filters.

All that having been said, you certainly can't go wrong with a Wix/NAPA oil filter.
