2016 Suburban power steering went out

Driving the burb and a message pops up on the display to service power steering.

 

Well I can say that it is a major PITA to steer. I'm no weakling and turning into a parking spot takes all I can to turn it.

 

I understand the need to improve vehicles and get more power and economy from a vehicle but the old hydraulic PS was pretty reliable.

 

There is no way I would be able to avoid a collision if one popped up in front of me. This is a serious issue.

 

So an FYI for everyone, if yours goes out be prepared to get a serious arm workout.

 

I looked at the fuse panel and I didn't see any thing listed as power steering. So no sure what fuse to check.

I find having electric steering to be a risk. It has no backup. If it goes your done and or in an accident. I agree the hydraulic system maybe should have been tweaked maybe with a disconnect clutch as to engage when used? But at least when the pump or line went you could strenuously still steer the car. Can't remember ever having a PS issue in a modern car! I have heard of many electric steering failures.

Well it is intermittent now. It went out and then today it was working again. Like any "spark" chasing it can be hard to find the problem until it stays broke. So we will see when I take it to the dealer.

 

I can say this much, seeing some older individuals driving around in the new Escalades, if the power steering when out they would not be able to steer that is for sure. It isn't just hard it is down right tough.

An update to this, the dealer called and said that they have to replace the steering gear. Of course it is on national back order but they located one from another dealer. Talking to MS3DALE this isn't an issue from what he can see. So if that is the case then why is the part on national back order? At least they found the problem and it is a good fix, I hope.

I don't know. Maybe that it was never a stocked item because it wasn't foreseen as a failure part. Don't know, but at least they are getting ours fixed and not having to wait.

Wow thats 2 power steering failures in this small forum.   I really wanted thank both users for posting as im going to ensure i get my gm  ext warranty  while i still can. How many kms is on your suburban?

 

One has to wonder  why this would go so fast?

Lost the steering rack at just under 60000 miles on our 16 Tahoe. 

 

It is a more common issue than you would think in the GM trucks.

It was the gear on our 2016 Suburban.  It was a bear to steer.  I don't see how anyone could drive it like it was.

power steering is electric on our rides.   there are known issues w/ multiple GM platforms.

 

there are plenty of TSBs for it.   as well as Recalls

 

its related to a few things btwn software and  voltage drop (&ground type) electrical issues
