Solved - Switched Wheels - No Relearn Required?

Recommended Posts

Switched from 20" 275/55/20 OEM to 265/65/18 18" OEM and the TPMS sensor light did NOT appear after driving ~ 10 miles. DIC pressure reads 33 PSI call around just like I set it manually with no issues. I was sure a "relearn" scan would be required. Is this normal?

Where the 18s previously on your truck? If not thats really odd and I don't think it should be showing up on you DIC without learning them first. I switched my summer 22s to newly bought winter wheels (with new sensors) and had to learn them before they would register.

When I took my stock wheels and tires off, i did not get a TPMS message until a few hours later. Can't remember how many miles it was driven but it took a little while.

This now makes sense and I think this will happen.

Thompson, they were never on my truck, just new OEM take-offs from another new truck that was being modified (lifted).

I believe, the the sensors in stationary mode transmit every 60 minutes to save the battery. If over 20 MPH, they transmit every 30 or 60 seconds.

I just tonight did a relearn on my 2017 as I had new wheels with new sensors and (they all have their own unique ID's) my truck complained as soon as I turned the ignition on. With the scan/activation tool, I didn't have to drive at all, they were instantly learned by the BCM while in learn mode. Not sure how all years work but I would think a 2016 would be the same as 2017.

You need an EL-50448 Pressure Monitor Sensor TPMS Re-learn tool

GM took the ability to do this on our own.

Just shop sometime you can find them cheaper.

I bought mine right after GM did this and got it for $20 but they have gone up in price now around $50 but sometimes you can find it for less.

BBS,

Light just came on as predicted but I'm due for my first free oil change so I'll ask them not to rotate the new wheels, just scan a "relearn" for me and call it even! If they want to charge me for a "relearn" then I'll buy that tool and do it myself.

If you re-used your TPMS sensors from the other wheels the truck will not now you made a change.

However, if you did not put them back on in the exact same location this could cause an issue with the stability control if you blow a tire.

It will adjust to the blown tire however, if the relearn was not done and say the front right blew out but the TPMS thinks it's the left rear because that is where the TPMS sensor ended up.

The stability control could send more brake to the wrong tire. This may cause you more issues trying to get stopped as in a blow out stability control will remove almost all of the brake from the blown out tire to help you maintain control.

New wheels came complete with the OEM GM sensors so I didn't need new ones.

How do you initiate a relearn scan ? I just bought some new 20inch wheels and 35s, going to use my tpms from oem wheels.

You need a scan tool, I use an ATEQ VT36, worked great.

Then, you need to initiate the learn from your DIC by pressing and holding the ok button on the steering wheel while in the tire monitor screen. Then go to each tire with the scanner and activate them, you will hear a horn beep after you activate each TPMS.

Or, go to your local tire/wheel store and they should be able to do it for you.

I sure hope so, getting a zone 6.5 lift and new wheels/tires, existing tpms being used and i hope the shop that does the work can do this.

DL,

Understood on the procedure. I stopped at the dealer because I'm due for my first free oil change / rotation today and told them what I have done and what I need. They will "relearn" my wheel swap without a tire rotation, no charge.

Do you need to reset your tpms when you rotate your tires?

Yes.

Good Deal. Easiest solution there.

If a dealer or tire company always does most peoples tire rotations, no need to buy a scan tool. I do my own and did not want to have to go down and rely on someone else to do this, only reason I bought one.
