Interior LED lights tied into headlights

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I have purchased a light bar for mounting behind the grill on my '14 Sierra. I have installed a switch on the center console that currently serves some interior LED lights. I want to connect these LED lights to the headlights so I can free up the switch for the light bar.

My question is, how can I tie the interior LED lights into the headlights so the turn on and off with the auto setting of the headlights?

Thank you in advance!

Wire the interior LED lights all into one circuit (which I would assume they are since they are operated by a single switch now) and connect to a relay that is tapped into the Headlight circuit.

Arcasey, yes, all of the LED's are tied together now to the single switch. What you are suggesting is exactly what I am wanting to do. What I don't know is which relay would be correct for the headlight auto on / off mode.

cbrsilv15, the front light bar does have it's own harness with relay, I am simply going to remove the factory switch with the switch that is cut into my console.

Just needing some direction on which / where the proper relay to tie into the auto on /off mode.

Thank you both for your input, I do appreciate your comments.

I wouldn't try to tie into any relays since you already have a circuit to power your lights and all you need is a way to control it. I would go buy a 5 pin automotive relay from any auto parts store and buy some of those wire splice clips (not sure of their technical name) that allow you to clip over the wire you want to splice into and connect it to the relay. Then connect your LED light circuit to the normally open side of the 5 pin relay and when ever the headlight circuit is energized the relay will activate and energize the LED lights.
