1996 Chevy Tahoe Sport, is it worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I want to buy a 2 door Tahoe for daily driver, I found one I liked on Craigslist but after checking the Kelley Blue Book Value the selling price is way off.

The sellers in the ad says it rare 1996 Tahoe Sport with a Z71 package, it looks very clean in the pictures but with 181,000 miles I wont be able to tell until I check it out in person.

The Tahoe is about 2 hours away so I want to learn what's should be the going rated for the Tahoe before I decide to check it out.

sport and gm truck is synonymous with a rough ride.

should be quite blippy/jerky fast at low speeds too, a 5.7 liter.

not a comfortable quest, that one.

it is fun until a long day.

..and those doors are hefty, thrashed around on the short base. They need pins and bushings more often.

other than that.

it is "sporty". :)

Sounds like a pretty good price to me, assuming no rust or intake gasket leaks. The clean interior and Michelin tires ($) imply that the owner kept up with things.

That's a good price if it runs well and if it's as clean as it looks in the pics.

I had a real clean one 6 years ago, it rode a tad rougher cause of the shorter wheels base. All things considered it's the one I wish I'd kept and did mods on to personalized it.

That's not a terrible price for that. They are rare which would make them run above book value but just judging from the market in my area 6,000 seems a little on the high side. A friend of mine bought a 96 sport tahoe (120,000 miles) about 4-5 years ago for $7,500 so that's why it seems a little high to me. Also, with it having 180,000 miles on it it's going to need an intake gasket job sooner or later. If it has had it replaced that would be a plus. Those 350 motors are bad for blowing intake gaskets. I'd pay close attention to the transmission when you test drive it too. A lot of 4L60e's tear up around 200,000 miles, at least most of the people I know were replacing them or having them rebuilt around 200,000. Other than that those trucks are great vehicles.

I personally don't think the Sport Tahoe rides that much rougher than the standard tahoes but you can tell a slight difference as others have stated. Good luck on your purchase. If everything is in working order you won't be disappointed.

Thanks guys for your input,

Am going to wait a while to see if the price drops, am scared about the mileage.

If I can get it for around $5,000 I will be all over.

With 181,000 am afraid it will need intake gasket/transmission/suspension work soon.
