General Motors will idle plants in North America this year to make changes required for new pickup and crossover vehicle models. This is according to a report by Automotive News. The scheduled plant shut-downs will affect multiple plants. The extended shutdown also helps to explain inventory. Which came first, the 97-day supply of vehicles or the plan to shut down plants is debatable, but GM's Alan Batey, GM’s president of North America, says, “We are absolutely where I want us to be. Our inventory is high because we’re going to take 10 weeks out in the back end of the year as we’re modifying our plants, particularly with pickup trucks.” The down-time is not to be confused with the normal summer-time shut down in July.

GM plans to retool for the coming generation of full-size pickups it plans to begin selling mid-2018.

This news follows a shutdown this past December in which GM stopped production at plants when inventory reached an 8-year high. At that time, GM had a six-month stock of Camaros built.

There we go boys and girls. Now the question is...when those 10 weeks take place. From all indications I can see, 2018 is a carryover body style. 2018 K2 model year start production the 2nd week of July. I'm betting for a late closure, say September - November, or October - December. T1XX appears to be 2019 model year, so 2018 calendar year is when they should hit lots.

GM should at least wait until they've worked the bugs out of the current pickup line. Instead they seem to be throwing their arms in the air and saying we don't know how to fix them.

Absolutely not. That is called throwing good money after a bad investment. The K2 trucks are a dead man walking. About one year of production left before being replaced. Why would GM invest 1 cent in a lame duck model year? GM needs to get the new trucks right next year and move on.

Because they need to show due diligence.. Take care of the customer. Build the buyers trust that they're commeted to stand behind their product. Say someone bought a pickup with the Chevy shake and GM gives up and says they can't figure it out? Sorry your just stuck with it ... But come back and buy another new truck. Every time they come out with a new platform they say how great it is and everything else is just a wannabe. Until the next one arrives, then we hear it all over again. Idk.. I still think a redesign is too early and they're playing into this escalation of people wanting something different all the time and not something better. Our attention spans are at a all time low as Americans and it's only getting worse. Change isn't good unless it's a improvement.. We should take a lesson from our previous president on that subject.

Yeah, right they will move right on in the proper direction! If the 900 series which was "OLD GM" was junk in my opinion other than the engine, and K2's were post bankruptcy GM's half ass attempt at building a TRUCK it sure was pretty good in my opinion......These 2019's are going to be the cats ass!

They will be very angular and kinda freaky/mean looking is what somebody told me?

I'm guessing a completely new frame to fix vibration issues?

Or better Quality Control at American Axle. Didn't GM move axle production from Mexico to the US because of QC issues?

The frame may be just fine and the "chevy shake" / vibration issue is due to the axle.
