2000 Sierra Intermittent AC

Javabear

Question

My 2000 Sierra 1500 SLT 2WD 5.3 has intermittent AC issues. Sometimes it works great all day, sometimes it works for 10 minutes and drops out, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The blower always works and changes speeds like it is supposed to. I thought maybe compressor relay or dash control and have changed both with no improvement. I think the blend actuators are jacked up as well because I don't get any airflow out of the defrost vents when I turn it to defrost. The only other thing that I have noticed is that the display in the rear view mirror is also intermittent. Sometimes it works, usually it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between that and the AC working or not working. I'm thinking BCM but I'm guessing at this point. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Took it to a different shop this morning. They adjusted the clutch and the AC is now working great. They said that it is now out of adjustment and could it could go out at any time so they recommended a new clutch and compressor at my earliest convenience.

at 17 years old..

the pressure may be good to kick on pump, but it must be dirty in some way by now.

go for a full evacuation (vacuum) and refill.

I plucked somebodies over ambitious pile of goo out of my 1996..too much dye and pag oil.

It held pressure even through a maine winter...but it still gave a random runtime.

Several things can go wrong beyond pump fail and leaks.

..and go for the real r134a. There is a lot of sloppy versions out there.

Yes the AC compressors have a clutch plate that wears, eventually the gap is too great for the electromagnet to pull it in consistently. Common problem. No way i would replace the clutch or compressor if they have adjusted it and it is working now. Wait until it quits. Sometimes they will run for many years

The shop that did the evac and refill says that they're about 98% sure it's the control in the dash. I thought it was that and changed it before I took it there. They did however fix the blend actuators so at least now my defroster works.
