Quiet performace Exhaust

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to upgraded to a performance exhaust, but I'm not in my 20's anymore and don't need a blasting loud exhaust that you can not here yourself talk while in the cab. What are the best options out there for a quiet in cab exhaust that still offers some decent gains. I have herd the flowmaster Force II is a quiet system.

5.3L or 6.2L ? This is your 2nd thread about this - but I see no mention of engine size.....

"Quiet" is relative - The Force II uses their "quietest" muffler the 50 series big block. You do lose the flapper and resonator going with most cat back systems. For the 6.2L FlowMaster system you gain 3.5" tubing all the way back. (OEM is 3.5" to the muffler, then 3.0" from the muffler to the tip).

A "quiet" system that keeps the flapper is the GM Borla system available at your dealer.

I have the 50 series big block muffler waiting to swap out, will be keeping the flapper and resonator.

Post 45 here is the closest video I have found of a FlowMaster with flapper in a 6.2L. This Super 50 is one or two steps louder than the Big Block 50..........

About a year ago, I had a 22" magnaflow installed. Deleted the flapper and resonator. Truck sounds good on startup and accelration. Not too loud, but not quiet either. Of course, as Krusty pointed out, that is all relative. I am 33yo and have 2 small kids, so my loud exhaust days are over. The chopper sound in V4 is annoying, and has been ever since I had it installed. I know many here say the MF won't impact fuel efficiency or power, but I feel like it was detrimental to both. Again, just my opinion, with nothing statistical to back it up other than the mpg readout on the HUD. With all that said, I can no longer deal with the MF.

I bit the bullet and ordered the GM Borla. It is supposed to arrive tomorrow. If I can get it installed this weekend, I'll follow up to let you know if it is quieter than the MF. I know it sure as heck cost more.

That would be great. That is the other issue, I am not trying to spend a tons of money changing it, because the bang for the buck isn't that great. no matter how much you spend. I don't need to pay $1200 for 10 hp. I ned to change my exhaust cause I damaged the one on it and it now rattles. I would like a nicer sound and, if an Added intake throttle body and exhaust and can imporve my MPG then that would be good. But I guess that's a whole other topic thread.

And his rig is a 5.3L so that would be good for you to know how he compares GM Borla to the MagnaFlow he has now. 33yo and loud exhaust days are over, I don't think so Borla buyer. LOL

So why not just get the damage repaired/replaced as needed?

because I would like to have the nice exhaust with little more performance and a nice sound.

I have thought about building my exhaust, just buying a muffler, and doing my own pipe.

Well the most cost effective way would be to repair / build as needed / wanted - and add a muffler of your choice.

Keeping the flapper will avoid the dreaded V-4 chop. A good muffler choice will avoid the dreaded drone....

that might very well be what I do, but that will end up being more work for me which means more time, which is something i have very very little of... Just trying to get ideas right now. Truck still operates fine.

GM-Borla... done!

like to add this as well, few people forget when they hook up to tow how annoying an aftermarket exhaust can be. After a long trailering trip across 3 states never again my ears can't take the drone anymore, my truck is place of zen and is uber quite, roll your windows down if you want to hear. I hate loud neighbors exhaust systems 7-8am on the weekends? getting out the pitchforks.

Shore just replace your muffler and flapper valve with a 22" Magnaflow 12589 but leave your resonator. Has a deeper tone than stock, minimal drone on highway and a slight "V4 chop" which won't drive you mad. Have the 3.5 inch version installed on my 6.2 and am quite happy with it. Sounds good when you mash the pedal.

Some things in life are better hired out. The local muffler shop will put on my FlowMaster for $75 labor, no appointment needed. Other things I have done myself, but always hire out now after seeing how much work, skill and tools are involved: Engine rebuilding, auto painting, upholstery, tire work, alignments etc. Home roofing, garage doors, concrete work, flooring, sheetrock, plumbing etc.

Absolutely, I'll follow up as soon as I can get it installed.

In the meantime, if you pull the trigger on something, make sure to keep your stock exhaust in case you want to put it back on. Even if it is damaged, keep it. Trust me on this one.
