Correct Pinion Angle

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what the stock pinion angle is on a 2500HD? I put 2" McGaughy's drop shackles on my truck. Forgot to measure the pinion angle before installing. The pinion angle after is -4 degrees.

I don't know the answer, but I did the same thing and installed 2* shims. Without, I was getting a slight vibration at slow speed when towing my camper. With the shims, I get a slight vibration at around 40 if I try to accelerate slowly and I'm in top gear. Not sure that's a pinion angle issue. I'm thinking of calling McGaughly's to see what they recommend.

I'm getting some vibrations at 65 - 70 mph. First step was to have the wheels balanced (which have ~1,500 miles on them). Three were a bit off and the fourth a fair amount per the tech.

Vibration still there.

Measured my angles again. Operating angle at the transfer case is 1.5 degrees and it's 3.5 degrees at the diff.

Ordered 2 degree shims and will throw them on, re-measure and test drive. Hopefully that'll cover it.

Will post up when i can.

I never even looked. I did the McGaugy's shortly after buying my 2015. I have never noticed a problem, loaded down or unloaded. Not sure why it should be an issue as the 2500/3500 rides are designed from the outset to be working pickups that will be loaded down frequently and run more level most of the time.

I did a lot of research but having said that I am no expert nor want to come across as such. I believe, if looking at the truck from the driver's side, the drop shackles rotate the axle counter clockwise thereby dropping the front of the differential.

This is a different phenomenon of putting the springs under load as presumably the axle moves vertically up toward the frame. This of course would change the operating angles of the driveline as you point out, but these trucks are built for that.

From what i could gather, vibrations from drop shackles are hit or miss. I don't think my angles were so far out of whack that it would damage the U Joints but I was feeling a vibration.

I'm hitting the road for a few days with the truck and will report back.

Drove 250 miles this morning and can confirm the shims removed the slight vibration i was experiencing at ~70 mph.
