Trading 2014 Sierra SLE Z71 to 2017 Silverado Z71

Recommended Posts

So my lovely 2014 Sierra SLE Z71 is being traded in for a new 2017 Silverado LT2 Z71, for the most part I have wanted to trade it from a year old when I got hit on the drivers side causing $11,000 in damage and well obviously not written off I wanted it to be as having a year old vehicle with a bunch of damage sucks as I'm sure some of you know. At the time when I purchased the Sierra I wasn't sure about the Emerald Green Metallic color but seeing it drive by the window of the dealership in the sunlight I fell in love, but keeping it clean and mark free is another story haha.

So finally a year and a half later I was able to strike somewhat of a deal for a new Silverado with flaps, boards and soon to be installed towing mirrors. I'm at a dilemma on what to do for wheels though as the stock 18" rims on these truck are super lame, I mean they put this sexy front end on it and these bland wheels, I prefer my 14 Sierra rims by a large margin but throwing some rims into the deal I hear can be very pricey at a dealership lol.

One thing I'm hoping and from what I have read is the projector lenses on the new trucks have been much improved from the 14 models, I had DDM HID's installed and a few months back replaced them with some DDM 40 watt LED's but they seem to hotspot a lot even compared to my once owned 2012 Kia Sorrento which had much better projector lenses than my 14 Sierra, have many others upgraded from say a 14 to 17 year model and noticed much improvement ?

Towing mirrors a wise choice. Well the 18's will give you a better ride - heck you might find someone wanting to trade wheels/tires if the stealership won't do it reasonably.........

From the day I test drove my Sierra I was like wow these are the worst truck mirrors I have ever seen and used, the angled cut totally takes away your sight of the area by the rear tires which IMO is important, also having my class 1 license I rely on mirrors, especially compared to drivers that don't have a class 1 or towed very much or at all, other than you everyone I have mentioned it to that I am having the towing mirrors installed thinks I'm nuts haha

Ignorance is bliss. Does't take long to realize how great the spotter is - blind spot be gone! My 2007.5 GMC 2500 sold me on tow mirrors - no way was I getting a rig without them.

Creimes just tell the dealer you wish to swap wheels from your old truck to new one. I believe the center caps should work from one to the other. Probably be easiest if you just swap both the wheels and tires instead of having to dismount, mount and balance.

Nice new truck! I inquired at my dealer as to the cost of installing towing mirrors and they gave me a rough estimate of $1600. Are you getting a significantly better price? I like the stock mirrors as they look good, don't block forward view and don't get knocked out of adjustment in parking lots! However I plan to purchase a travel trailer and the "clip-on" mirrors don't appeal to my tastes! If you are getting a significantly better price, I may save any conversion plans to when I head east this summer!

I thought of that as well, would be nice to get new rubber though lol, I may just wait and see if I can sell the stock rims and tires it comes with and put that towards some aftermarkets and new tires, I do have a buddy that has a dealership that I would be able to get cost or a bit above on some rims depending what he can get.

That's exactly what I am paying to have the mirrors purchased and installed, it isn't the cheapest but I also have a 24ft trailer I pull and yes the clip on mirrors can be alright but any half decent ones I have found locally are like $300 and still don't compare to actual tow mirrors, from what I measured they are only 3 inches wider on each side compared to the non tow mirrors, like I mentioned from driving semi I prefer good mirrors on a daily driver no matter if I have a trailer on or not, I don't drive semi anymore but my work van has the mirrors with the convection mirror on the lower half and it's policy we always back in when parking and it helps big time having the better mirrors. I just realized you can get them in power folding but I'm thinking they would cost much more haha, but it would help having them folded when parked.

I also looked at some knock offs on ebay, DTMOTO has some that look identical for about $350 CAD shipped to your door here in Canada, but you would need to either purchase the oem harness's for $100 each or pgamboa who replied a few posts up has harness's he makes, but also the computer needs to be programmed for the lighting on the mirrors to work if you are going from our mirrors to the tow ones with all the fancy lights :P

One thing I know for sure is I'm getting these put in right from new, the kids and wife aren't as fussy as I am so the truck usually looks like a gravel/garbage pit haha

U R a brother from another mother - see the Weather-Techs installed in mine here post #93.....

Some say the Husky's are good and heavy rubber - but I like the light and easy to clean Weather-Tech's - and better coverage under the go pedal than the GM knock-offs.........

Just turned 1,000 miles today in the first month and have needed to hose them off several times.

haha, well the wife mainly drives it as she hauls the kids around and I bike to work so in all honesty she puts more miles on it then I do, are your tow mirrors power folding I'm assuming since you have a model of truck way higher than I will.

Oh and I'm also thinking hard about throwing some Recon LED taillights on it for a sharper look, IMO it's 2017 and every light on every vehicle should be LED

Yes they power fold - (2) driver memory etc. Hopefully adding them on by the dealer, you get all the features.

I don't find myself folding them much - but when you are in a tight spot - like pulling into my workshop's single garage door - nice to have. They will even fold from the remote - and or I can lower all 4 windows on a hot day with the remote.

The short wheelbase makes her pretty sporty too, and a bit easier to park etc.

  • 3 weeks later...

So it was a gorgeous sunny day yesterday so I took the time and removed the dealer window decal and badge and all three Silverado badges plus the LT badge and Z71 decals, and IMO it looks much better with no badges, simply just cleaner looking. Used a heat gun and even though scary a little pry bad being very very careful of course and when all lettering was removed I used a 4" Decal Eraser wheel attached to my cordless drill, and when I get time I'm gonna do a full Mothers wax on her.

Pics of course or it didn't happen haha
