6.0L Muffler Swap

Recommended Posts

So I'm looking to make my 2016 sound a bit meaner. I was looking at the magnaflow 12909 because I'm worried about drone with a flowmaster 40 (and pissing off neighbors). I cruise at 65 on the highway, 2,000rpm and that seems to be the drone zone. I have a RCLB if that makes a difference.

I'm fairly certain our trucks are 3.5" dia tubing which is giving me a hard time finding a shop willing to do the work. The stock muffler is so big and long it's going to cause me to have to weld extra pipe into the system. I'm also thinking to run an after axel dump hoping to make it a bit louder

What are your guys thoughts? Anyone here swapped mufflers on their k2xx 6.0? What did you do?

Thanks

I swapped my factory trash can muffler to Flowmaster 50HD series. Info in this thread http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/187698-wow-super-50-flowmaster/which is also what several others have done.

Some members like the Magnaflow setup, info here http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/185985-60-exhaust-ideas/page-1

Guys who used the 12909 MF...did you have to add a length of pipe to make up for the muffler length difference? Did you retain the factory pipe routing out the back or has anyone done an over axel dump?

On my 2012, a standard bed crew cab, I needed a six inch piece of pipe. Because the 12909 is a center/offset and the OE is a offset/offset; I had to lengthen the factory tail pipe hangers to get the muffler outlet and the tailpipe lined up.

Far as I know, the shop just cut out the factory and welded in the new one. I retained the factory pipe and routing out the back.

Loving the "quietest" Flowmaster Big Block 50 Series on my 6.2L - The suggestion came from a 6.0L owner. Makes sweet music nobody could possibly complain - even the neighbor you don't like..........

Anyone have an idea of how much of a weight difference there is between the stock 'trash can' muffler and something like the Magnaflow?

--JOsh

Probably 15 pounds...the trashcan is completely empty (just baffled), the MagnaFlow is full of glass.

Following for information/suggestions. I've considered running some sort of electronic cut-out that bypasses the factory muffler when I want to make noise, but still keeps things nice & quiet on long trips or when towing. I've always heard the 6.0 engines are drone monsters around 1,800-2,000 RPM's with aftermarket exhaust systems, and I really enjoy the factory system on long drives pulling the camper.

I'm scared to mess things up, like I did on my old 1500. Based on many forum members' recommendations, I swapped the factory muffler for a GM Performance Parts Borla Sport muffler, but got sick of the drone after a few months. So, I went back to stock....after eating the cost of installation for both mufflers, and selling the Borla for about 1/3 of what I paid for it. I'm not made of money, so that whole process hurt quite a bit, and I don't want to do it all over again.

I'm leaving the 2500HD's exhaust alone. It's weak at idle, but sounds decent when on the road. Also, the stock one should get louder with time and miles from what I've read. After all the muscle cars I've owned, I've come to the conclusion that installing anything louder than stock exhaust only means I'm going to sell the vehicle within a year. However a cutout would be a good compromise if it sounds good.

I know exactly what you mean. An exhaust that's too loud on long trips can make you dislike any vehicle in a hurry. I've been there too. And yes, as far as factory truck systems go, the 6.0 HD isn't too bad. The 3.5" pipe gives it a decent tone under acceleration, but it's nice & quiet while cruising...even when towing a load. I've never heard that they'll get louder over time. It's my understanding that the factory muffler doesn't have any kind of fiberglass packing to wear out...only plates and baffles to direct the flow.

My buddy has a new ZL1 Camaro with the dual-mode exhaust. He can control the sound level with the push of a button. It's perfect! I guess an electronic cutout would be a poor man's dual-mode system, haha.

Put a y pipe on it run a glass pack or what ever you like. Run it in front of rear tire or along side the stock exhaust, add a block off flange. Best of both worlds.
