2017 sierra 6.2 and the range afm disabler

Recommended Posts

I ordered and received my new 2017 sierra dcsb with the 6.2 liter and am loving the truck but not the afm so much. I live in an area where theres lots of hills and I don't like the 4 banger mode.

I want to run the range afm disabler and the inline switch to shut it off while the truck sits and was hoping to hear from anyone who has the new 6.2 liter 8 speed transmission and is using the range and their experience with it, likes or dislikes, and if it has thrown any codes.

Thanks in advance for any info posted

You could just run manual 7 in the meantime. I tried the AFM disabler and it was a pain in the ass. I got a BB tune and deleted it.

Thanks, I have been running in m7, I ordered my truck with 3.42 gears and when hitting the highway it sure would be nice to use that 8th gear.

Was it the plugging in and unplugging that made it a pain?

Why - I sure can't tell when mine goes in and out of V4 - it's seemless....... Even with the Flowmaster - I can't hear nor feel any difference.....

Thanks for the reply Krusty. For me with the constant uphill downhill driving it is in and out of afm mode constantly and I notice it. Losing a little fuel efficiency to be able to stay in v8 mode all the time doesn't bother me. If afm mode was an option I would have opted out.

Where abouts do you live with all these hills - on the Palouse? Being able to hear it shift now with the Flowmaster, I do notice changes in exhaust note from shifting - the 8sp has a lot of shifting to do. Sometimes I think that must be V4 / V8 changes - but check the DIC and it did not change. So I think all I am hearing/feeling is shifting.

But yea - would be nice to have a switch on the tower to opt out of V4 - like you can with some of the safety nannies.....

That and the fact if I forgot it in the port, my battery would be dead in the morning. Man, I hated that thing lol

I have one that was just updated but I haven't plugged it into the truck yet. I hate when these things cause problems. Have you had any issues with it other than a dead battery?

I just ordered mine today and also an OBD switch. As soon as I get it I will post up how it performs.

I used the AFM disabler for almost 90 days and left it plugged in without issue with the battery. After about 90 days, I got the faults of traction control, stabilitrack, abs... my unit needs to be updated.

Well I got my Range AFM disabler in the mail and the first time I drove it worked fine, loved being able to keep it in V8 mode.

Second time, got in started truck and got a check engine light and "steering assist reduced" code, later that day I got an email from onstar saying my truck is having engine/transmission problems and to take it to dealer.

Called Range and they said it's a known problem and even if I clear the code by plugging it in while the engine is running the code would come back within so many drive cycles.

They have been testing but have no fixes or updated firmware for this problem as of yet.

Going to have to look for other options, would love to find a tuner that would just turn off afm and not change anything else so warranty isn't voided.

Well that's disappointing. At first I wanted to ditch it immediately. I paid for the bigger motor; don't neuter it! But now I really don't even notice the transitions before 4 and 8

That is why I dislike the Range products. Had one in my 2007 Avalanche and had nothing but issues. I'll never get one for my 2016 Sierra. They said its a "known problem" and they still allow the sale of them? You should just go with a handheld tuner and either disbale it or you can set the MPH of when V4 kicks in. If I tuned mine, I'd set it to like 65mph before it engages. For now I just use M7 in city and country driving. When I hit the highway, I go into M8 (sometimes I forget lol).
